DirecTV just launched 2 local channels in HD here in Seattle, and will launch two more soon. Can I get these channels if I upgrade to the 5 LNB Dish and keep my HR10-250?

No, you'll need to get an HR20-700 DVR or an H20 non-DVR receiver in order to receive any future MPEG-4 programming.

SeattleWendell,
Your HD Tivo has two tuners that can catch the locals OTA in high-def if you can catch the signals. Where do you live in relation to the broadcast towers? Have you looked at antennaweb.org and put in your location? I live in Tucson (but lived in Seattle area nearly my whole life until three years ago) and here I can get the OTA channels with an indoor antenna. Now, there are some SERIOUS geographical challenges with the hills and valleys in and around Seattle - but you would be surprised how well the OTA channels integrate into the overall Tivo experience. I prefer the OTA channels because of the clarity - but YMMV.
Let us know - maybe we can help you get your locals in HD without a hardware change.

Thanks for the info on Antenna web. I have tried the OTA in the past and there were too many trees. My current area has less trees. I think I will try a better antenna.
Thanks again for the info.

I just ordered the HR10-250 an am confused about my locals. From what I am reading, it appears that if my HD locals are broadcast in MPEG-4 then I will need an OTA antenna. Are some HD locals in MPGEG-2 or both and therefore wouldn't require the OTA antenna? If the Antenna is required can it be in the house or does it have to be on the roof as well? A friend of mine who just installed the HR10 says he does not have an OTA antenna but still gets his HD locals. I am in the NYC area.

NYC gets mpeg2 HD locals from satellite...at some point (unsure when) they will go mpeg4 but if you are in the NYC market, they should turn on the HD locals for your HDtivo.
of course if you can receive anything OTA, some say that that pic is much better than satellite HD.
also note that not all locals HD are on the satellite

I get hd locals 25 miles through a think northern minnesota forest. It is worth a try I spent 25 bucks on a radio shack antenna and get a solid signal.

trees aren't always a bad thing...my installer said i'd have trouble come spring when leaves come in...but the tree is 200 ft away
the above link shows the diffraction and possible reason for it
