If I am to understand the current D*HD DVR only recieves locals via OTA, correct?
Well, I live in a condo and can't have an external HD antenna and I've tried an internal one, no joy.
Will D* take that into account and give me the network HD feeds or am I screwed till the new box comes out and I can recieve the MPEG 4 feeds?

1. Buy a big antenna and put it somewhere in your apartment. I purchased a Channel Master 4228 and installed it in my attic and I'm picking up stations broadcasting from 35 miles away. The thing is ugly as all hell, so you wouldn't want it sitting in your living room. It's a 3' x 3' directional antenna.
2. Wait for the release of the HR20-700 so you can get your locals in HD via satellite. Rumor is the nationwide release of the HR20 is going to be soon.

Yes, the HD Tivo only does Digital Locals OTA.
No, DirecTV will not take into account the fact that you can't use an antenna. You
need to wait for the HR20.

The "current" HD-DVR... the HR20, will receive them right now (as of today), via SAT... OTA support is slated to be turned on in October.
And the HR20 is already out and can be ordered from BestBuy (they have an exclusive till mid September)
The HR10-250... yes, only OTA HD networks
And you can discuss it with DirecTV as they "may" turn it on, but they have been very stingent on it lately.
For locals via SAT you would need the AT-9 5LNB dish though

Best Buy has started to ship them to any market. It was an LA exclusive for just the first few weeks.
Around the 13th or so, Best Buy's exclusive ends and other retailers (such as VE, and Beach wood) can ship to any customer.

Bunch of peopel reporting receiving Shipping Tracking numbers, and some even stating that some actual stores have them available.

I didn't get it from Best Buy, but D*TV is shipping me one for my HD upgrade next weekend. I live in Cincinnati so I was surprised to hear they were sending me one instead of the HR-10 Tivo. I've spoken to 2 different CSR's who both stated we would have local HD's via sat in September or October. If they are rolling them out to us in the Midwestern cities and states like Ohio, I would assume they are adding a bunch of other major markets in the very near future. We pretty much always lag behind the 2 coasts in getting cool stuff :)

Why does Best Buy have a two week exclusive on these?

Best Buy is DirecTV's national retailer... DirecTV displays are pretty pernounced at most of the Best Buy stores that I have visited (and I have been to a few :D )
My guess is that they worked an exclusive agreement with DirecTV

Just why can't you have an antenna at your condo? Lack of exclusive use area or the condo says so. If the latter, then they can't prevent you from putting one up. It's the law.

they can tell you what side of the building you can use and if it isn't the side for optimal reception you coul have problems. Fortunately for me the side I needed wasn't on the front of the building so I was able to install a couple of squareshooters. I just had to sign a waiver saying I would be responsible for any water damage etc. If I had a DirecTv contractor do the work I would have been worried, but since I did it myself, it has been fine now for 2.5 years.
