View Full Version : Perpetual Pending Restart

OK... got home and get a 'service interrupted, hasn't connected in 30 days, connect to tivo now" message. Which is false, I have programming up to 9/17 -- even says so under settings.
I connect through my network -- get pending restart.
It boots back up... same problem. I've gone through this song and dance 3 times now.
I've also noticed that my extras aren't showing up on the main page.
Should I let it be until 2a in hopes that forcing calls and restarts isn't doing anything? Or do I have a "clear everything" problem on my hands. I have a Series2 unit. Software version 7.2.2b-oth-01-2-540.
Thanks in advance!
Restart the box. If you have the same problem, call Tivo.

I'm starting to dig up some old posts saying that this could be a HD failure. Has anyone else come across this?
EDIT: Thanks for the response. I have restarted, a few times and it keeps telling me to restart. Seeing it was fine earlier and now I'm mysteriously missing all info leads me to believe something crapped out.

Most likely the hard drive is going. The TiVo was unable to complete the upgrade to the new software version. It gets stuck in this mode. It also will not download a new copy of the software because it thinks it has a copy already. It is probably stuck in this mode until:
1) you put an imaged drive into the TiVo.
2) You get TiVo to repair the unit.
3) TiVo sends out a new version of the software and the TiVo is successful at loading it (probably not very likely).
You can get preimaged drives from weaknees.com or ptvupgrade.com.
You can image a drive yourself using Instantcake from ptvupgrade.
Check out the Upgrade Forum for more info on replacing (upgrading) drives.

Did you put in the larger hard drive after you started having problems? If so, you probably copied the bad files from your old drive to the new drive. You might want to go to an Instantcake image.

i did the upgrade about 7-8 months ago.....and 9/1 was the last day stuff recorded. now i connect successfully, download and load...and goto reboot. But when it comes back on, ill try to goto season pass, and it says i havent connected in 30 days....even tho the connect screen shows i did

First, check the drive connections, may be that the power or data cable is loose. If they are OK then you might want to re-image the drive.

We just started having this very same problem with the perpetual
"Pending Restart". We re-ran the Guided Setup and it corrected out
problem. The good thing is that we did not lose our existing recordings
or wish lists. Our issue was definately not hardware.

I tried that and it didn't work. Was still giving me the error 100 message and the restarts. I'm trying a clean wipe now. My situation was weird... the channel info just wiped. It didn't happen during a connection or anything. Just in the middle of the afternoon... ZAP!
Then again, I've been wanting to upgrade to the DT, so maybe this is the impetus I need... only $49 after rebates which is cheaper than sending it off to be fixed.
EDIT: Another forum suggests re-running the guided setup also. The guy said it only bought him a couple of weeks though and he had the same problem the next time he needed to update.

sorry to dredge this up, but I did more searching on my issue, and this was a thread with my same issue (and apparently many other people's as well).
I will do the guided setup if you think it won't ruin my to do list.
What is this DT thing that you talk about? I have an old tivo dvr-a pioneer 810H is that makes any difference.
I would be really bummed if it's the harddrive going. I am obviously a neophyte, and much of the stuff you all discuss is beyond me--putting in new drives, wiping things clean....
I will do the guilded setup, and then if that doesn't work, got any suggestions? I am in a perpetual cycle of waiting for this update at 2am.'
thank you,. aimee

Last night I called tivo technical support at 3 pm PT explaining that my TiVo restarts daily trying to install a new service update which never seems to complete. The guy instructed me to put it through the hard drive test with the green screen using the 57 command while it is restarting, and call back if it did not work after it completed it's test.
I called back at approx 6 pm PT to inform them that the problem had not been resolved and finally got through after 51 minutes of holding (Ridiculous). They told me they could not find my case number but after eventually locating it through the DVR serial number I was informed that there was nothing they could do about my TiVo not being able to install the service pack and constantly having a 'pending restart' status.
They did however, say that I could upgrade for $149. I do not want to pay money just because the new software will not install . I have never had a problem previously since I got my first TiVo in 1998 up until now , and am so dissapointed by the service that I received for the first time in over 10 years.
Has anyone had any problems like this recently and if so how did you resolve it? Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm sorry your issue isn't getting resolved. When our cable company went digital my TiVo essentially stopped working correctly......wasn't worth the hassle anymore to restart it all the time, and be able to record so little.
I went with a Moxi and can record two programs at once, and I don't have the stress of having to hard boot it, hook up a 60 foot usb cord out the back door and in my other door and into my office to the router every week. And even then it didn't know what shows were on. The moxi has been fine.
my tivo sits on the dining room table--anyone think it has any value? hard drive isn't shot.....

I'm not sure what you expect. You have a hardware problem; 99% chance it's your hard disk. Disks go bad whether computer or TiVo. You can replace the disk yourself with only a small amount of computer knowledge - there are plenty of threads here which tell you how. You can pay for outside folks to replace the disk for you - just look at some of the sponsors of this forum. Or you can go the TiVo upgrade route, which may be the easiest route. It all depends on what you want. But to expect TiVo to do something else for you seems silly.
