I don't know if anyone has asked this, but I can't seem to find the question anywhere on the forums. I have a DirectTV Hugues HDVR2 and after reading the forums I think I can safely assume I have a dead hard drive (it does the "Loading. . .Reboot" error, and I have tried all the other alternatives to fix this). My question is, I can't find an image file for the hard drive on the net, so is it possible to make an image of a dead drive? Also, if I make a backup image, and then format the drive, hence marking the bad sectors, would that drive be usable? Thanks in advance.

Easiest approach when your existing drive is dead is PTVUpgrade's InstantCake utility. You can download it from http://www.ptvupgrade.com and it includes the image files you'll need.
You didn't search much, did you? :)
Try weaknees.com, ptvupgrade.com, the underground forums here ... just to name a few places.

Thanks for the help. But is there anyway I can salvage this dead drive? 40GB seems like a waste to just throw away.

Who knows? Try Spinrite or a similar utility.
But given the price of hard drives these days, especially 40GB drives, doesn't seem worth the trouble.

Okay, thanks. 40GB isn't alot, but it could easily go into my Xbox. Or a backup HD for anything. I'm sure I could find something to do with it.

In situations like this where the drive is dead, is there a way to get the image directly from CD to the new drive? All the instructions (weakness, ptvupgrade) seem to indicate I need an "extra" drive with FAT partition to act as a swamp drive while the image is moved to the new target Tivo drive. Any ideas?

Do you have an image on CD? If so, once the boot CD is loaded, you can remove the boot CD. Put the image CD into the drive. Then use these commands:
mkdir /mnt/cdrom
mount -o ro -t iso9660 /dev/hdX /mnt/cdrom
Substitute the X for the letter associated with the CD position. Then in your mfsrestore command, use /mnt/cdrom/xxxxxxx where xxxxxx is the name of the image file on the CD.

This kinda sucks. I took out the original drive and ran all kinds of diagnostic test and found that there was NO problem with it. I guess a power outage or something must have corrupted the data. But the hard drive is fine. I put it in my Xbox. Also the drive I bought to replace it was faulty, so I had to RMA it. Now it could be 2 weeks before I can fix my Tivo.
