For those unaware MyNetwork Tv premieres Monday, check your local listings. In Tampa it is running on the old WB network. Two of their shows premiere Tuesday with an introduction special Monday night. They are running both shows 5 nights a week 8-9:01 and 9:01-10:00 est and a weekly recap show on Saturday nights. The shows will supposedly run for 13 weeks and then new shows will replace them in the same format. Are you planning on giving them a try? Also if another network was to run your favorite two shows this same way do you think you would like it?
According to their website:
Welcome to MyNetworkTV
* It's a new brand of television. It's your brand.
Short drama series airing Monday to Friday, packed with high energy, gripping stories and a captivating cast.
* It's TV the way you want it.
Non-stop originals that conclude every 13 weeks with a high-intensity finale.
* It's easy to get hooked and stay hooked.
Catch up or re-live all the excitement with weekly recap shows every Saturday. Recaps are also posted on the website, lead off each day's episode and can be sent to you in a newsletter.

Supposedly this works in the Hispanic markets, but I just can't see most people having enough time to watch a show every night. Maybe if you just watched the Saturday recap show it would work, but most people just have too many other things going on, and if they're TV fans, it's unlikely they've got five free nights.
There's a reason that soaps run during the daytime and not during prime time.

That is my thinking. I think if they reran every episode later that night or even as a marathon on Saturday they would be ok but I just don't see them being successfull with it the way it is now.

There's no way we'd be able to keep up with 5 hours per week. The recap show would be the way to go.

But the show must be good for me to even watch one hour. 5 hours it must be really good. And I dont see that quality on the WB.

Except that this has no connection with the to-be-dead WB network, other than the fact it was thrown together rather hastily due to the death/merger/etc. of WB and UPN to the CW.
What I'm telling you here?
Don't even expect WB-level "quality" from this stuff.
Some of the early buzz is downright scary for them!

Seems tailor-made for a TiVo. Record the week's episodes and then watch them over the weekend. Although your FF finger probably will get cramps.
I think the soap Port Charles, in a desperate attempt to get some ratings traction, tried using the telenovela structure -- complete stories in a 13-week period. Didn't save the show.
If these telenovelas had some NC-17 action and nudity, I *might* be tempted. :D

I've seen the extended previews on the DirecTV showcase and it doesn't matter so much to me that they're 5 hours a week as that they look like cheesy, over the top sopa opera shows with a little more action thrown in them.
Put on a sci-fi show in this format and you've got my attention ;)

What pisses me off is that in Sacramento, the WB affiliate was 58, which is now My58.
The UPN affiliate, which became CW, is 31.
Dish Network carries 31 in high definition. The good shows, the old WB shows that I watch (namely Smallville) are on 58... in SD. Geez, is MyNetworkTV even HD?

The shows you want to see (at least as you have stated here) are going to be on CW, meaning over on 31 (in your area) when the networks start up their new season.
Once MNT (My Network TV) kicks in your local My station (58) will be running the MNT programming and none of the old WB or UPN programming.
The former WB stations (in most markets) take over the CW programming -- including Smallville, Veronica Mars, Everybody Hates Chris, and the programs that used to be on WB (like Gilmore Girls, 7th Heaven, etc.)
You should be just fine once the new season starts up, with 31 (in your area) carrying the stuff you mentioned you want to see.

Oh, in answer to the question raised above (started the thread with) -- I could see this type of programming working much better if the mini-net wasn't insistent on NOT repeating the programming.
What would make sense to me is to have them run the two shows new in the main prime time block (8pm - 9:59:59pm eastern) and then run a repeat from the previous day in the 10:00pm - 11:59:59pm eastern block. That would let people that missed a previous show for some reason catch it.
I guess it's possible that Fox/My Network will run previous episodes over the net in some way, and if so that might keep the interest from dropping off too quickly but in reality MNT is going to be an also ran to pretty much every other network show out there.
Once the regular season schedule starts up for CBS, ABC and NBC, in addition to the already running FOX schedule, and the coming CW schedule, the viewership for MNT is going to be severely minimized.

Yes, MNTV touts itself as an "All HD Network" meaning only that all its programming is in HD, assuming your local affiliate has the ability to broadcast in HD. LA is not one of those markets.

The channel is limiting itself to two soap operas. Now, I admit, I really enjoyed Dark Shadows as a teenager but I am not a teenager anymore and these are not horror/fantasy soap operas. I think the format will fail. The other four networks offer much more interesting programing.

Yeah, but it looks like Fox is willing a chunk of change to find out if it's a good reason.
I'm very interested to see how the experiment works. And if it's good. The previews may look cheesy...and that may be very indicative. However, telenovelas often start kinda lame/cheesy but then some of them get really riveting and addicting.
Also, the no repeats, at least according to the programming grid here, is kind of not true. While there is a new episode every night, they also re-run each episode the following afternoon, a couple hours before the new episode airs. SO, this means that people could miss a night and then Record/watch it the next afternoon and get caught up (obviously I'm talking about non-TiVo owners; for TiVo people, this is all very simple) before the new episode airs. That means you could watch the show unaided by a TiVo/VCR by tuning in a few as three nights a week (granted for longer blocks). American Idol, Big Brother, etc., have no trouble getting viewers three times in one week. If you combine THAT with the extended "previously on..." and "next time on..." scenes and weekly recap shows on the weekend, I actually don't think the commitment from the viewer goes very far beyond that which large-enough blocks of the English-speaking audience already makes to a given show.
So it could flop due to content...but at least some of this content has already been tested to be adequately addicting/entertaining content (I don't know if Desire or Fashion House are translated or not but I know some of the drama series that MNTV has in the pipeline were actually just translations of Spanish-language telenovelas). And it could flop because of the way it's scheduled w/ a new episode each night...but this certainly hasn't proven to be a deal breaker format for Spanish language audiences in the country or abroad.
The success is of the network itself will be a soap opera to follow in addition to the ones they air. ;)

I don't find the idea of 5 hours of one show daunting in a week. I probably watch half my tv that way. What I found daunting is 65 episodes in a series, that spans 13 weeks. I just don't think I have the patience nor ability to keep up with that.
Would I love for a show to be so amazing I looked forward to seeing it 5 nights a week? Sure I would.. Is it likely to happen, ever, no.

Well they repeat times here seem to vary between 10 AM to 2 PM but the recap shows appear to be running early Sunday morning (Midnight to 2 AM) and SUnday night 8PM to 10 PM.
Unless you don't work, it will be harder to catch the repeats (especially for those without TiVos) and the recaps still have to compete with the Sunday Prime Time lineups.
Plus the big advertising dollars will be for the Prime Time slots, not the mid day slots.
Unless the ratings really aren't that important, I'm not sure that they'll succeed past the first year.

I've set it up to record the first week episodes of both shows....whether or not i have the time to watch all the shows is another opinion. Ill give them a try and see if i like them or not....
This raises another question, what are the expected results of these shows?? Obviously they cant be THAT high so I guess we'll see whether its a succcess or a failure...

The extended previews (that showed up as a "yellow star" item on DirecTiVos, and I'd assume stand alone TiVos, last week) left me completely underwhelmed. Doesn't matter if they're 5 nights or 1 night per week. Cheesy overacted melodramatic evening soaps are not something I am interested in watching.

MyNetwork TV is on the former UPN affiliate here. After the UPN / WB merger was announced, and it was clear that the former WB affiliate would get CW, WUPL stopped showing anything on their "DT" channel in HD, only upconverted 480i. But, prior to the merger announcement, they showed plenty in HD (I watched Veronica Mars in HD) so I know they have the capability. I'll take a peek tonight to see if they're showing the MyNetwork shows in HD, or if they're still so ticked and getting this short stick that they feed them to their DT channel in 480i.

The answer To that question can be found in the daytime soap operas. In spite of the poor production quality, they are among the most addictive shows on television. My mother was a devotee of "Days of our Lives" since I was a child, and in spite of my distain for the genre, quite unintentionally got hooked into the story lines, just from the accidental viewing of the shows, when taking care of my mom in my 20's. Even now, 20 years later I find myself getting pulled back in, every time I flip past an episode, and have to forcefully resist the temptation to watch. I think MyNetworkTV, is counting on this phenomenon, for their success, but personnally I doubt that they will have the opportunity to suck people in during primetime.

The format MyNetwork is using is based on very successful telenovellas, with some upcoming series directly adapted from their Spanish-language counterparts. (Selma Hayek is one of the producers, I believe.) There is a large audience of Spanish-speaking viewers in this country who are already used to this concept, so maybe MyNetwork will attract some of that audience.

I tried watching Northern Exposure once when it was being stripped five days a week. Tivo did not exist back then so I taped them. I soon realized I was going to have a mountain of unwatched tapes. This could easily happen with these two soaps. Unless you are a real dedicated viewer they will fill up your Tivo.
It looks like KOLNDT2 UPN is becoming MyTV (no "Network"?) as well. And it looks like I won't be getting to watch the rest of the original Mission: Impossible series.

2) If I was bored, and

Certainly not something I could see myself watching 5 nights a week. I have enough soapy stuff to watch already (Nip/Tuck), thank you!
I was kinda surprised that the ratings were so low. I was thinking more along the lines of 1.5 to 2 million people watching. I guess it was fair to expect the ratings somewhere between Pax and WB numbers, though, which seems to be about what it got.
I think Fox is more concerned with possible syndication/DVD sales than the first-run ratings, though, and to give Fox-owned stations slightly higher ratings than they'd get from airing syndicated stuff (plus it's cheaper to keep it in-house, and I'm sure the episodes are cheap as hell to produce).
