Dual Tuner

I just purchased the dual tuner and was reading the user's manual before we decided to install it. Am I able to record two shows at the same time--being broadcast at the same time? Must I set the times or will Tivo know when my show ends?? I was looking at the Season pass but the priority instructions made it seem as it could choose to record one over the other? HELP!!
