Thanks to the posts here I was able to get the Tivo HD DVR (HR10-250) plus new dish for almost free ($19.95) plus 6 months free HD. I've been a DTV customer for about 3 years and I have Total Choice Premier so I guess I'm a good customer. (Keep calling the Retention number if you're turned down at first.)
My install was scheduled for last Friday between 1 and 5pm. We had massive rainstorms so I was expecting the installer would be late. Sure enough, when I called DTV at 5pm I was told that he'd be at our house by 7pm. I called again after 7pm and was told that they had tried to call me to reschedule due to darkness but nobody was home. Liars!!!
Here's the good part. The installer showed up around 8:30 and apologized that he'd been delayed. I asked if he wanted to reschedule, since it was pitch black out, and I didn't want my install messed up. He offered to try and do it, and went up on the roof with my portable halogen light. He did a great job, tucked in the cables nicely and got everything working perfectly. He looked dead tired when he was done so I tipped him $20.
My reason for upgrading to HDTV was to see the Yankees in HD. Although DTV told me that Yes Network was in HD for my area (NY) he wasn't sure. He stayed around to wait for the Yankee game to start so he could check. Unfortunately, it was an away game and Yes only broadcasts in HD for home games. He gave me his phone number and asked me to call and let him know if the homes games were truly broadcast in HD. Since so many people complain about shoddy installs, missed appointments, wrong equipment, etc., I wanted to let everyone know that sometimes things work out correctly. The installer was great and he really went the extra mile.
Now if only the software in the HR10-250 was upgraded, so I'd get folders back, I'd be a truly happy camper! :D
