It should download and install the new software over the phone. All the series 1 machines have been updated to the latest version in the database.

It will probably take a few days, because it will have to call home to indicate that it doesn't have the latest. Then v3.5 will either download from the sat, or since it has been a while, probably over a few phone calls. Then it will need to install the update. So, plug it in and leave it coinnected to the phone until the update occurs.

The database at DirecTV has what version of the software the DirecTiVo should be running by service number. When the DirecTiVo calls in, it checks the database for what version it should be running. If it is running a different version it will check it local disk cache of slices. If it does not find it in it's disk cache it will download it over the phone immediately. 3.5 has been activated for all the series 1 DirecTiVos in the DirecTV database.

Forcing calls home should help, woudln't it? Won't hurt, just go in and keep making it call home, and it may grab it quicker.
