I have DishNetwork now, and can remember the nightmare I had to go through to get my Tivo programmed the first time around by just using my broadband connection.
I don't know how I did it, just know that I'm one of the unlucky few. I'm looking to switch from Dish to DirectTV, would this require going back through the whole install again? Anyone know how easy/hard of a task this is? If it's gonna be that difficult, I'll keep Dish.

With the DirecTiVo the phone line is only really needed for the initial install and to activate software updates. For the initial install just go through the install until it has to call in. Then disconnect the DirecTiVo from the satellite and take it over to a friends house with a phone line and let it dial in from there.
To activate a software upgrade the DirecTiVo does not have to be hooked to the satellite dish. Again, just take it over to a friends house and force a phone call.
After about 25 days of not making the DirecTiVo will nag you every day to make a phone call but it will not hurt the functionality of the unit. Just delete the daily message. There are hacks to ignore the daily phone call.
PPV can be ordered over the DirecTV website.

The OP doesn't have a DirecTiVo. He's using a standalone with Dish Network and wants to use it for DirecTV. In this case he'll have to rerun guided setup so that the TiVo recognizes a DirecTV box instead of the Dish box. He'd be better off getting a DirecTV DVR/TiVo (anything that isn't an R15 :)).
