I absolutely cant stand the new directv dvrs without tivo for reasons too numerous to write here. Since its unlikely that Directv will renew their contract with tivo and go back to the r-10s or something of the sort does anyone know if you can make a standalone dual tuner tivo unit work with directv?

Why not buy a refurb DTivo from ptvupgrade or a used one from Ebay?

I had heard that they would stop supporting the tivo units when the contract expires in 07 - plus the new tivo units are cooler!

Contract was extended to 2011 (about 6 months ago)
And even then they would probably still continue to support them afterwards

1) Tivo and DTV renewed their contract
2) Ultimate TV units which haven't been made for 2 + years still work
3) yeah they look cool but
A) The dual tuner won't record 2 analog streams ( I don't think)
B) If it does then you would have a 13 dollar tivo sub fee and 2 receiver fees per tivo so 23 dollars a month for "dual tivos" vs 6.

It would definitely be cheaper to do that rather than buy a tivo with a subscription... but I like the features of the tivo such as remote access etc...

Not trying to disuade you from buying a fine Standalone Tivo, but with the exeption of the Yahoo subcription stuff, everything else is available on the hackable (not the R-10) DTivos.

Quick search looks like the phillips is "upgradable" - might be worth it to work with that one instead of the r10

not so.
I ordered refurbs from them with Hard drives in the past.Maybe in the past, but doesn't seem like they do now:

Philips DSR704 Factory Recertified (no hard drive)

Later in the page it says:

The DSR704 comes with cables, manuals, remote, a primary hard drive mounting bracket and IDE cable, all in new condition and in new packaging. These units do not come with a hard drive or an access card. The access card can be easily obtained by contacting DirecTV. And a hard drive can easily be configured by using a standard IDE drive, InstantCake, and PTVnet for additional networking capabilities.

This comes from this page: http://www.ptvupgrade.com/products/dsr704/

As far as DirecTV is concerned, the DT standalone is no different than an ST Stadnalone. The second tuner on a DT only does analog cable.

I doubt that DirecTV will stop supporting DirecTV DVR/TiVo as long as there are some in subscribers hands. When I say support I mean the guide data.

Remember there are still many Ultimate TV dvrs out there.
