Hi

I am so new to this world I’m not sure I know how to pose the correct questions. I found this forum while trying to educate myself.

The Quest: I would like to copy shows from my DVR to a DVD for playing at a later time or location.

I currently have a DVR from my local cable company – was Adelphia – recently taken over by Time Warner (don’t know if this is a good thing or not).

I do have a new computer that can burn DVD’s and it is on a wireless router. The PC is hard wired to the router - so I’ve not actually used anything wireless yet – but it should work.

What are my options? I started my search looking for TIVO / DVD recorders. But I found that the reviews on these units are 2 years old, leaving me to believe there might be other options.

Will some of you be good enough to educate me? Or perhaps point me to white papers or blogs that already spell this out?

Many Thanks!

Jeri

If you go to the Tivo website, you can purchase a Tivo/DVD-recorder straight from them.

You can also use a regular Series 2 Tivo (also purchased from Tivo) and have it networked to your computer with a wireless adapter (check with Tivo to see which adapters work and which don't). You can then use TivoToGo software (free) to download the shows from your Tivo to your PC. Then you'd need Sonic's MyDVD software (not free) to burn the show to a DVD, assuming you have a DVD-recorder on your PC. As far as I know Sonic is the only company that has the ability to record Tivo shows, but others might know other options.

As for using your non-Tivo DVR, I'm not sure you have any options.

Check out the avsforum DVD recorder section (run by the same people who do tivocommunity.com)

I have 2 Tivos, but I also have a Toshiba RD-XS32. I would have *far* preferred (and paid $$$ for) a Tivo/DVD recorder combination, but the Tivo/DVD recorder combinations don't have the following things that I consider important:
Being able to edit a recording before burning (both removing commercials and saving ~5 minutes from an hour long show -- actually I do the latter far more than the former nowadays, but I do both sometimes)

Being able to record to DVD in multiple sessions. That is, record a show onto a DVD now, then record another show next week. On the Tivo/DVD recorders, you can only put recordings on the DVD once. (Technically, the DVD is "finalized" immediately, which makes it usable on standard DVD players.)
