I have had TIVO for almost 4 yrs, we switched to DIRECTV last spring, we just kept our reg ol tivo. well now I think the harddrive is starting to die and I am kinda sick of the 12.95 a month...so I see directv DVR is 4.99/mo.
my question is we still have BASIC CABLE w our locals on it, so can the directv DVR record those as well???
also we have HDTV but not many HDTV channels so we watch those live , so no real need to record in HD........
also how much is it to ourchase the directv dvr???? just trying to see what I shoudl go w..............thanks

Nope. It cannot record anything that is not sent down via the sat.

Can you get your locals via DirecTV? If so, it may be a good thing to look into...
But then again, the DVR's D* is sending out these days are not actual Tivo's either, so that is something to take into consideration.

...so I see directv DVR is 4.99/mo.Now $5.99/mo, but a good deal - especially if you have multiple DVRs - it's per account, not per box - so if you have 6 DVRs it's (average) is $1 per DVR!
my question is we still have BASIC CABLE w our locals on it, so can the directv DVR record those as well???As stated above, no. It can only record the DirecTV satellite data stream.
also how much is it to ourchase the directv dvr???? just trying to see what I shoudl go w..............thanksBe aware that the standard def (i.e. non-HD) DVR offered by DirecTV today (the R15) isn't a Tivo-based unit, and many of those with Tivo experience dislike the R15.
Look through the past month or so of postings in this group... the question "where can I still get a DTivo" gets asked/answered every 5.744 days. Costwise... could be as low as $50, as high as $300-ish.
A DTivo will mean quality identical to what came in on the satellite (it records the compressed satellite program itself), dual tuners (almost never a conflict!) and none of the hassles associated with trying to control a separate standalone Tivo.
Any of the "Series 2" DTivos can have their recording capacity expanded using a commodity disk drive and readily available instructions. Any of the S2 Dtivos (except the model R10) can be easily modifed using the Zipper (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=265929) to provide 95% of the networked functionality of the standalone Tivos.

Check the Directv web site with your zip code to see if they offer locals in your area. THey do for almost the entire country.

Nope, according to DirecTV's web site your local channels are not yet available.

You might consider getting DTV with an HD-DVR receiver. Nice thing is that it is still a TiVo based unit at this time and it can record your local channels in HD or standard def via an off-air antenna. Of course that is if you are able to receive locals using an off-air antenna.

I has a series 2 stand alone Tivo that died after 2 years. . I had all my local channels recording with no problems. I decided to order two receivers from Direct TV. I no longer can view nor record via my DVR. I have to shut the Direct TV receiver off to view local channels. What a piece of crap.
Not only that Tivo was going to cut my monthly bill in haft and offered to send me a refurrished TIVO at no charge.
