It's been a rocky road, but TiVo's struggle might be ready to pay off in a big way.
As recently as last year, industry analysts were pessimistic about TiVo's prospects. The company's co-founder and chairman Mike Ramsay stepped down. Competitors were making major inroads into the digital video recorder market.
TiVo's share price plummeted to less than $4 in the first quarter of 2005, and the results for that fiscal year showed a net loss of $34.4 million. Things weren't looking any better when the company announced its first-quarter results for the current fiscal year, showing an $11 million net loss. Revenues were increasing, but were outpaced by costs across the board.
But as the company gets ready to release its second-quarter results Wednesday afternoon, shares in TiVo are trading at nearly $8, and things are generally looking up for the makers of the device former FCC chairman Michael Powell once called "God's machine."
