I'm upgrading to a Tivo DT Series 2 and would like to sell my Series 2 ST. I have added the weeknees 2nd drive upgrade kit (including fan) with a 300GB hard drive to go along with the original 80GB hard drive. I got the Tivo in January of 2006.
What I'm thinking is selling it on eBay and what I would like to know is; do I need to remove any information from the drives prior to selling?

Just do a clear and delete everything. That is all you need to do

Are you saying to use the 'Clear' that is in the Tivo menu?

Message & Settings->Restart or Reset System->Clear & Delete Everything (C&DE)
It may take awhile. Once it comes back up to the initial set up screen it is safe to pull the plug.

I have a weaknees upgraded 140 series 2 with lifetime in the bedroom that I never use. I also have an upgraded weaknees 540 series 2 with lifetime in the TV room, which I stopped using when I got a hi-def tv. I've been waiting for the series 3 to replace the 540, and using Comcast's PVR for the time being (ugh).
My question is should I sell both the series 2's with lifetime service? They're not costing me anything to keep.
Perhaps sell one and keep one for the time being in hopes that I can transfer the lifetime service to the S3?
What are they worth on Ebay, anyway?
TIA
Jim

What they're costing you to keep is the $$$ you could get for them if you sell them.
If you're not using them, I think they'd sell better now than after the S3 is released (when lots of other people will be upgrading and selling, as well).
Search completed auctions on eBay to see what you might get for them. Make sure you include "lifetime" in your search terms.

Keep at least one to get the MSD on your new S3. Just be careful to not buy the S3 from tivo.com or you can't use MSD until package deal run out...

I don't see how it's worth it to hang onto an unused upgraded, lifetime TiVo around just to save $6 per month. Those things are worth hundreds of dollars on eBay. I would guess in the neighborhood of $400-450, based on my experience selling upgraded TiVos with lifetime. It takes a lot of months for a $6 savings to add up to that kind of money.
Now, a broken 40-hour TiVo with lifetime doesn't have much resale value, so one of those might be worth keeping around.
And no, it's not likely that you'll be able to transfer the lifetime service.

In March I sold my Series1 with Lifetime on eBay for $325. It was a 5 year old system. I had added a new drive, turbonet card and a replacement remote.
With the Lifetime you should do pretty well on the sales.

Very good point. Never thought about it that way.
I'm may have to rethink my own plans as well. I have a soon to be unused upgraded, lifetimed 240.

the 240 can be hacked without having to do a prom replacement. That adds some good value to the right person ;)

Yeah, the 140 and 240 are the most hackable *and* fairly good performers. The 540 is more trouble to hack, and the slowest S2.
The only real difference between the 140 and 240 is the USB hardware - the 140 being USB1.1 and the 240 USB2.0. But you don't see too much real-world difference because of that.

MRV performance, when using USB 2.0 adapters, is considerably better on 240 units. However that only applies if you have two 240 units. In mixed environments performance is lowered by the receiving unit. TTG is about the same on both, since the CPU is the bottleneck for TTG and the processor in both is basically the same.
