What DVD authoring software is out there if I want to write dvd's from my Tivo desktop. Tivo has one linked to their website but I was wondering if there were any others that can be used. Also is there any way to copy the files from a PC and then make dvd's on a mac? Thanks.

You can use direct show dump to get the tivo files to mpg, or videoredo to read in the tivo files, cut commericals then export out, then use any dvd movie burning software you want to make the menu's and such.

so all i really have to do is convert it MPEG and then I can burn it to DVD? I'm really not concerned with menus and such I just want to be able to get some of the shows I have saved onto a dvd so I can view them on the train or during my dinner breaks at work.
Is video redo a freebie? Sorry if these questions are dumb but I'm a newbie to all this stuff.

VideoRedo isn't free, but it's well worth the cost ($50). If you want to quickly edit out commercials and things like that from .tivo files, it's the way to go. I love it.

Be sure to see the multi-page thread on this:

I use DVDStyler (free) to author DVD's from TiVo files. Do a search in the thread for "DVDStyler". It has a few quircks but the easy workarounds are detailed in the posts.
VideoReDo is great and very popular. You can download it free and then remove the 30 minute content length limit by requesting a 15-day free trial key from within the program itself, all very painless. It gives more satisfaction and causes less trouble than just about any $50 program you can think of. It is just an MPEG editor -- that's all it does, but it does it very well.

could a dvd recorder work also? If I connected a dvd recorder and used the save to vcr function would the show record to the dvd, and would I be able to view what was on that dvd?

Yes, that would work.

that would work but you wouldn't be able to use your tivo for anything else while its recording.
