hi everyone, i just recently bought tivo after getting some advice on this message board. I love it and just wanted to say thanks for all the great advice
Also i lost my remote that came with my series 2 dt and was wondering if yall thought i should buy a replacement from TIVO or are their some better unversal remotes that i should get? Thanks!!!
All depends on personal preferance. If I only had one Tivo, I'd much rather use a real Tivo remote, rather than a universal.
I'd get a real replacement. I'd never use anything other than the TiVo remote - looks and feels great and controls everything I need it to. If you have a complicated AV system you might want to consider a good universal remote, but those can be $80-$200 depending on what you get.

I have a Sony AV-3100 universal touchscreen remote that I use to control my entire A/V system. It works fine to control my TiVo, however I don't use it to control my TiVo.....I just really like the way the TiVo Peanut performs. Far superior to the universal. I do know that many here on the boards seem to love their Harmony remotes.

Universal remotes are a highly personal preference so everyone has their own opinion about what's the best one to use. I have a Harmony remote but I haven't had a chance to program it yet. I bought it because I got a great deal on it and also because it has a charger cradle that means you never have to replace the batteries. The one gripe I know I'll have is that the buttons are too close together and not distinct enough, but only time will tell.
I also like the way the Tivo peanut remote feels but with four Tivos in my system and numerous other devices it's just not practical to have a pile of remotes sitting around. The peanut remote is about as far as you can get from being a universal remote and the TV functions were obviously thrown in as an afterthought.
I'm currently using a Home Theater Master MX-700 remote that works extremely well. It's the first truly universal remote I've ever owned and the only one that has ever contained enough memory to store every command I've programmed into it. I used to have a Marantz RC-2000 Mk II which, in its day, was probably the best universal remote available to the average consumer. Problem was, it went through batteries in no time at all and weighed a ton.
I've tried the Sony touchscreen remotes and really don't care for them. They're big and clunky and hard to read, but that's just my opinion. I don't have any long term experience with them so YMMV. I prefer hard button remotes vs. touchscreens since you don't necessarily need to see the button to press it.
