Can you guys enlighten me?

Thank you,....marc

The TiVo can record from digital channels by connecting it to the cable supplied box and controling it via an IR blaster. However it will NOT record HDTV.

If you want to record both digital cable and HDTV then you're going to need a Series 3 TiVo, which based on current rumors will be released on September 17th for a retail price of $799. It uses CableCARDs, rather then an external box, to record digital channels. So it works a lot more like the cable company DVR, then a S2 standalone TiVo. (i.e. it records all digital channels in their native digital format, not via an analog to digital conversion)

If you want to record HDTV, take a look at the Series3. The Series3 is Tivo's first product for cable with support for HDTV.

Let's mention here that a Series 2 most certainly CAN record HD programming...

But the signal has to be downconverted to work with a StandardDef/analog television device.

You'd be able to record HD programming on a series 2, if you have a digital cable box, but the recording will be only standard def and that's all you'd get out of the TiVo, even if you have a High Def television.

Series 2 Tivos cannot record HD signals! If the signal is coming over a composite RCA connector it is not HD. Yes, I get your point of TiVo being able to record any old SD signal that is jammed in the old yellow RCA plug so your cable box can do the down-convert it can record it. Why do you insist on correcting people on this. You seem to be fixated on making this great point that it can be done. When 99% [(everyone-you)/everyone] says the S2 can't record HD they mean in real HD format.
