View Full Version : S3 "Grandfather" Program problem?

So, I purchased a S1 TiVo off eBay that had its Lifetime activated before the Jan 20, 2000 date. Called TiVo and since the box was never mine, I was on hold for a while, but they did confirm that the Lifetime service was eligible for the Grandfather clause to transfer the Lifetime service once. He told me there were some stipulations, though...
(1) Can't be transferred to a DirectTV unit. Okay, so that's fine with me, since I don't plan on getting one, and perhaps that was a given anyway.
(2) Can't be transferred to a Dual Tuner unit. Whaaa? I don't remember reading this anywhere, and I remember posts saying it would be good for any future hardware. Wasn't the DT future hardware at the time of the termination of the Lifetime program?
(3) Since the S3 has yet to be released, he said he could not say if the S3 will be restricted or not.
Now I'm getting worried because he told me he could not say about the S3, nor was he able to tell me why the DT was a no-go. My problem is, if the DT is considered some sort of "better" TiVo and that's why they're denying it, what's to stop them from denying transfers to the S3??!!
Anyone had guarantees in writing or whatever that grandfather clause WILL be allowed on the S3?

Grandfather transfer: The one-time "Grandfather transfer" (for people who purchased Product Lifetime on or before January 21, 2000 [as in, more than six years ago], and who have not already used their one-time transfer) is still allowed and will also be honored for future hardware releases from TiVo, such as the Series3. If you have any trouble when you call, please mention KDB code 09-07-04 to the agent.

Search the above header on eBay (www.ebay.com) for another grandfather transplant opportunity!

can an existing directv unit "grandfather" into a s3 unit? (IE directv unit that had lifetime put on it early enough, "grandfather" a standard unit)

No.

Did you ask it it was OK to transfer it just one of the tuners on the DT unit? :)
Who else knows how much it hurts to have a S1 with lifetime activated January 27, 2000?

FYI: I have heard that if you have a series 2 that was purchased before 1-01-06, that you can still have lifetime service added, as someone complained about the fact that, ON TOP OF THE BOX, it states that you can upgrade to a one time lifetime subscription! However, that is on all of the series 2 boxes, except for the Dual tuners! So, I wonder if that statement on the box would hold up in court or not, as the same thing should apply to series 2 purchased after 1-01-06, up until the cut-off date, even though they were still selling units with the same wording on the box afterwards!! Anyway, if this is true about the series 2 purchase before 1-01-06, then if you waited and had the lifetime added when the series 3 came out, you should be able to transfer it to another unit within the first 30 days, as they have done with the Dual Tuners!

...you should be able to transfer it to another unit within the first 30 days, as they have done with the Dual Tuners! This invalidates the rebate on the DT, so you'd have to factor in an additional $150 to the cost of the unit. This prevented me from transferring a <30 day lifetime to my new DT.

I suspect this post is just FUD the poster decided to have some fun throwing around. I would not take this seriously unless more details/links can be provided by the poster. I had just answered a post of his in another thread and the pattern is to post half truths to see what can be stirred up

The validatity of this comment aside, it doesn't say that anymore on the new packaging for the single tuner S2s (these boxes are thinner). These are the units that come preinstalled with 7.x software.

So, you have a TiVo with Lifetime activated on 1/27/2000?
If not, why are you responding?

Yes, you are free to provide your continuous, unhelpful, sarcastic blurbs. 'course that doesn't mean they are necessary.

If I have a service number for a TiVo that's not mine and the person who owns it doesn't know what the email address is that they signed up with then how can I find out if it is a Grandfather Tivo?

The person that owns it will have to call Tivo with the TSN.
