Originally I told myself that I wasn't going to get an HDTV until the Series 3 came out, but I succumbed to the allure of football in HD and got an HDTV anyway.

So I go down to my local Time Warner office and pick up an SA 8300. I was really reluctant to do so, but needed a DVR. What a piece of junk!

First, the audio doesn't work when connected to my receiver. I had this problem when I first tried digital cable a few years ago(before I got a TiVo) and promptly returned it. The cable guy came out and when we plugged in either the left or right channel audio it worked, but when both were plugged in the volume was very low. So he went to the truck and got another one. He assured me it was "new", but it looked like it just returned from Iraq! When I asked him about it, he said "it's new, but it's been bouncing around in my truck." Great, a device with a hard drive has been bouncing around in the back of a truck. This SA 8300 had the same audio issue as the other one.

Anyway, back to the title of my post. When I use TiVo(my series 2 is still active and waiting for a Series 3 sibling), I sit down when I get home from work and use the "TiVo Live" guide to quickly scan what's on tv that night. On most channels I can easily see from 7pm - midnight all at once. On the stupid SA 8300 I can only see 2 hours in advance so if I want to do the same thing as I do using TiVO I have to scan all channels from 7-9 and then rescan them from 9-11. This is highly inefficient!

Did TiVo patent the "TiVo live" guide or do other DVRs have something similar?

Cable company PVRs always have been and always will be crap compared to the TiVo.
