View Full Version : Corrupted Transfer Problem Still Not Solved

I started a thread earlier this week on an issue I was having with transfers getting corrupted while being transferred to my computer (original thread: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=312637) and thought that the suggestions there had resolved the issue. Well, I finally got around to watching some of the shows that I transferred over, and the problem appeared again. I've now moved away from blaming TD 2.3a as files copied over using the web interface exhibit this condition also, so now my focus is on either the Tivo or my computer. Are there any other suggestions for how I might go about attempting to resolve this issue (aside from trying a different computer)??

I have the same problem. Tried for 6 months to get it to work without success. I've finally concluded it's my computer that causing the corruption. It's a Dell Dimension. Everything works fine on my HP laptop though.

Yeah, I've pretty much set my sights on my computer also. At first I thought it might be other network traffic that was screwing it up, so I disabled AV software, turned off all stuff that connected to the internet (browsers, AIM, etc.) but still didn't help. Have you happened to have done a reformat during that time period to see if that cleared the situation up? I'm now kinda curious if it's a hardware issue or something weird with Windows...

Could be a codec issue. (either a crappy one, or one that is a evaluation and timing out after x minutes of use)
If you do a File -> properites when playing a video in WMP it may tell you wish video codec it is using.
Another test would be to convert the .tivo file into an .mpg. Theres a few posts about how to do that. Then see if the MPG plays properly (try playing the mpg in a VLC Media Player)

I've tried the MPG conversion route, and that's actually my primary test for if a transfer is good or not. I've tried two different programs (neither of which I think are "appropriate" to talk about here), and they'll both either have problems with a file or both work fine. If you want to know the specific programs I'm using, I guess just PM me.

Yup, reformatted the hard drive, reloaded windows, got rid of all the AV and just about everything else I could think of. Put in a gig of RAM. Hard wired the Tivo to my router and hard wired the router to my computer. I also changed my ethernet card. All to no avail. Tried wireless, still the same problem.
The file is getting corrupted during the transfer process. It looks like it puts a gap in the data. This causes the video frames to get out of sync and it crashes in Media Player. The location of the glitch(es) is/are random. Up to that point everything plays just fine and if you jump past it, it will play.
I believe I've also had problems with downloads of software off the internet too.
The Tivo is a Toshiba with a built-in DVD burner. So now I just burn it to a DVD-RW, transfer to the puter and use one of those other programs to edit it.
Seems like there should be some diagnostic software out there to locate the problem.
Maybe someday I'll get a new computer.

That's what the other programs have essentially been telling me also. One thing I've noticed though (and I'm going to continue to test this theory tomorrow) is that no show has ever taken more than 3 attempts to transfer correctly. Then, after that, all shows will transfer just fine the first time until I restart my computer. Don't know if that helps pointing the finger any, but that did strike me as a little odd...

This may not help you at all but I had a very similar problem in the sense that the .tivo file would play for a couple of seconds or maybe a minute and the video would freeze. I was using WMP 10 btw. Someone in another thread pointed me to an older version of WMP (6.x, I believe). I then downloaded it and it would play the files perfectly fine. Just for the heck of it I then tried to play the same file (that had been "corrupt" and would not play in WMP10 but would play it WMP 6.x) in WMP10 and it would play fine????????
Not sure how/why/what was going on but all is fine now.
EDIT: Here is the WMP link. It'a actually version 6.4.9.0

Just so ya know. There are (were?) problems with 6.4.9.0 and TD 2.3.

Didn't know that. I don't know which version I was using when I first tried 6.4 but the latest wasn't out at that time.
BTW you were the one that told me to try 6.4. I forgot to officially say "thank you" so Thanks. I bought the tivo so I could record shows, put them on my pc, edit them, and burn to dvd, etc. I went through 6 months with zero help from tivo so I was extremely glad to finally get this to work. And I thank you for it.
