Hi everyone, I'm considering buying a tivo and just need a little help. I would want to connect the tivo to the computer so that I can save the video and burn to a dvd.

I've read different things about how you can/must connect the two devices..can I just take an ethernet cable and connect the tivo to the computer directly, or do I need to use a router, or some other equipment? Also, for connecting the tivo to the outside internet (which I need to do to register (no phone line) and get the program listings, right?), can I just plug the tivo into an ethernet jack directly?

At school we just have one ethernet jack in the wall; I could use the wireless card on my PC and connect the tivo to the jack in the wall through a cable..or I could get a wireless adapter for the tivo I assume?

I also can't have any wireless routers at school (maybe any routers at all, I'm not sure), incase that changes any answers.

This was probably confusing but any help would be appreciated..thank you.

you need a router. It will allow you to attach at least 4 devices to your one wall jack.

Actually you probably don't need a router. Routers are designed for sharing a home brodaband connection amoung multiple users. Most Universities already have large routers in their IT department that does sharing of their connection, and that port on your wall is just one leg from that router. If that's case for your school, then all you need to share the connection is a cheap Ethernet switch like this one...

Now if your University is setup in such a way that you have to use some sort of PPPoE software to dial into the network, or some sort of special "modem" to gain access, then you will need a router. Otherwise it's a simple DHCP network and the switch will work just fine.

thanks dan...yeah its the situation like you said, where the port in my wall is just a leg from the router.

I don't have any special software or modem to gain access...so I assume that the product you suggested will work fine. Thank you.
