I have discovered why the Tivo update does not work with the Direcway 6000/7000, however I do not know how to fix it.
The problem stems from how DW handles secure communications (ht-tps). As any one who uses DW can tell you (ht-tps) conections are SLOW. I hooked a sniffer up to my network and watched the traffic as I made the Tivo attempt to connect to the update service. The Tivo sent out the handshake but before the response was returned the Tivo had timed out (failed to negotiate).
What needs to be done is increase the Tivo time out factor about 2 fold.
This would allow for the slow reponsivness of using DW and (ht-tps)
any Ideas
miker
sorry for the (ht-tps) the system sees it as a url and won't let me post

How long was the timeout that your sniffer detected? And did your sniffer pickup the response after the timeout? If it did pick up the response, how long did it take? What speed is your connection on DirecWay? Do you have a static IP address?

Hello darknite
The ack from the tivo server arrived about 3 seconds after the tivo failed to negotiate ( this is waht the tivo says on the screen when attempting to connect via the network)
The direcway connection speed varies due to environmental conditions
( weather , etc.). The speed is not the problem. The way Direcway handles
htt (sorry forum rules require that I break this up enable to post)
ps secure connections it has always been slow. all direcway 6000 and 7000 systems experience this. This is why NO one with a
direcway 6000 or 7000 system can update via the internet.
I do not have a static IP but the direcway customers that DO hav a static ip CANNOT connect either.
All the other internet based tivo content works just fine (yahoo, music, radio etc.)
But these are not secure connections this problem has been around for a while

Hi Darknite
I should be able to post a url now
http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=183165&page=1&pp=30&highlight=direcway
Also if you did not get it the tivo is using a https:// connection
( could not post that either)

The thread runs from July 2004 !!!! to Aug 2006 .
I am amazed that TIVO has refused any sort of help
They will not even admit there is a problem.
A simple tweak to the response (ack) time out and problem solved, Would make alot of Direcway customers happy.
I have had a tivo for 4 years and opted to pay every month (oops) they have made money on me, but I a seriously considering dropping Tivo and going with direct tv I pay 30 dollars a month for basic telephone ONLY for TIVO, plus i pay TIVO
Just not worth it anymore :(
