Our Humax TiVo DVDR is making a constant hissing or shushing sound that only stops when you unplug the unit. Standby makes no difference. The unit appears to be functioning normally. Any idea? My appologies if I missed a thread. Searched through recent ones. Originally went to buy another Toshiba, but there was only one open box and found out they were being discontinued. Should have sought it out, I think.

Sounds like it might be the fan. You can open the box and unplug the fan to see if the sound stops. Weaknees.com has replacement fans for TiVos.

Thanks for your ideas. When I can I will unplug/disconnect and take it apart. Not enough hours in the day.

Mine had been noisy for a while and then I started having problems getting internal errors during burns. I opened it and the fan was FILTHY. Got a nice soft paint brush and a can of air and banished all those dust bunnies. She's quiet now, but I'm not sure that if fixed the burning problem.
Moral of the story is: better to address this sooner rather than later.
