View Full Version : Corrupted Transfers??

Unfortunately I can't track down the exact nature of this issue as lots of variables changed, but this is the situation:
I've been transferring shows (typically 30 minute ones) onto my computer since we got out Tivo near the beginning of the month without any problems. I then moved that computer (running TD 2.3) to another location and hooked up a different computer in place of it. By then, 2.3a was out so I downloaded it and continued transferring shows over. Well, on this new computer, many transfers are appearing to be corrupted as they will begin to play fine but I'll then get a codec error message and playback will stop. I burned these onto a DVD and tried taking them over to the first computer I had been using, but they had issues over there also. The reason I'm led to believe that transferring the shows is the culprit is because I can retransfer the show and the entire thing might play fine or this issue will arise as a different location. I have not yet tried uninstalling 2.3a and downgrading to 2.3, but I plan on doing that later this week.
Does anyone have any ideas on the cause of this and how I could go about fixing it??

If you copy the original .tivo file from the new PC to the old PC does the old PC mess up and error out in the same exact spot?
In any case don't bother reverting to the older version of TD 2.3. The only thing the desktop software does is transfer the file from the TiVo to the PCs hard drive, it doesn't actually do anything to the file that could cause corruption. If they are actually being corrupted then it's happening on the TiVo itself, and the best thing to try would be to pull the plug on the TiVo and allow it to reboot.
If that doesn't work then you can make 100% sure it's not TD by simply loging on to the TiVo using your web browser. Simply use the url https://<tivo ip>/nowplaying/index.html when prompted for a user name and password enter tivo as the user name and your MAK for the password. Once you do that you will be presented with a web interface to TiVoToGo where you can download programs using simple links.

Have you tried accessing the TiVo directly through a web browser using it's IP address? For example, if the IP is 192.168.1.50:
https://192.168.1.50
The username is tivo and the password is your media access key. This page will let you download the TiVo recordings directly from your web browser. This will allow you to bypass the TiVo Desktop software to see what's actually causing the problem.
Best of luck! ;)

I burned the file to a Data DVD to transfer it (not sure if that matters in any way), but yes, it still errors out. Exact same spot I'm not sure about, but both fail early on in the file, and it sure doesn't work

Thanks, I'll try both of those on Wednesday (the next time I'll have access to the Tivo and the new computer). Hopefully one of those will fix the issue, but I just find it odd that the Tivo would be at fault since it was working fine for almost 2 weeks and then the first day of using the new comp and 2.3a this issue comes up.
(And thanks also, odawgx. No reason for me to quote your post, but I appreciate the reply :).)

Well, I unplugged the Tivo for about 5 minutes and tried transferring files through the web browser, and so far so good. However, (and this may be unrelated) my Tivo has become restart happy -- it's rebooted completely randomly twice this afternoon (both during transfers). I would be freaked out by this, but it also randomly restarted a couple of weeks ago when there wasn't a transfer going on, so I know this isn't an issue completely introduced by unplugging it for a few minutes. I made a separate thread for this issue (can't post the URL yet; its in the Help Center), but thanks for helping me at least (hopefully) resolve this one.
