View Full Version : 7.3 bummer... lost feature... Avert Your Eyes!

Our two units just got upgraded to 7.3. Alas, there is one change that is really troubling. No matter how one selects a show to play now, the TiVo displays the channel banner and the TIME!!
It used to be that if you selected the show (select button or right arrow) and then selected play (select or right), the show would start or resume-- WITHOUT any banner.
Now, no matter how one goes to play the show, the TIME is displayed.
We don't like this! If we get up in the middle of the night and decide to watch a show, we don't want to know what time it is! If we stay up late reading and then decide to watch something, we also don't want to know what time it is.
We used to have an option-- now 7.3 has removed that.
(Note: Under previous OSs, if you pressed Play directly at the NP screen, it would display the banner. But at least in the good old days, one could go through the menus and get the show without a banner or the time.)
IS THERE ANY OPTION SETTING SOMEWHERE TO TURN OFF THE BANNERS ENTIRELY FOR RECORDED SHOWS? I mean, after all, we know what show we're about to see because we just selected it! There's really no reason to display the banner at all! I think this should be sent to the Committee on Redundancy Committee! :)

Renundant - YES
And it seems to stay up for a while and isn't removed quickly.

I've learned to immediately press the "Clear" button to remove the banner when I play a recorded show.

Actually, not much difference in "closeness"; I press the Play button while highlighting the title in "Now Playing", instead of hitting "Select" twice. That way, my thumb's already by all the buttons I need to manipulate my viewing of the show.

Appreciate the responses... at first I though I was imagining the change-- or forgetting how it used to behave.
I've already learned to beware of the quick press solutions! I started trying the select and then Clear--and ended up deleting the show!
Thank goodness for undelete!
Another problem with the quick press is that the banner does NOT display right away either! Instead, it comes after a moment, so one has to wait before pressing the clear screen.
Well, I guess it's time to return to the TiVo Suggestions web page and let them know that this change is definitely for the WORSE!
I think the channel banner should never show up for playback (by default) and, optionally, for those who want it (why?), a setting to allow them to turn it on.

I HATE the way the channel banner behaves after the latest update. It just hangs around every time I play a show! Selecting the "clear quickly" setting option does nothing. Now I have to find the Info Button every time I start a show so I can see the beginning. I find it a major annoyance!

This one is annoying as hell.
Nothing TiVo did software-wise has bothered me, until now.

Tivo's Suggestions page for reporting if this bugs you and want it fixwed!
http://research.tivo.com/suggestions/2web519.htm
It also gives you options for features you'd like to see and a way of ranking your preferences.
Don't just complain, but SUGGEST! :)

I wish I had a dollar for every time I've hit the Watch TV button instead of Info trying to clear that blasted banner!
Thanks for this thread that let me know that it wasn't something I did, but the software upgrade, and that even though I choose the "clear banner quickly" option, it doesn't make a difference.
I've even written Weaknees to tell me how to permanently clear the banner, but haven't received a reply.

I keep trying to get rid of the banner by pressing the left arrow--you have to time it just right because otherwise it'll stop play and you'll end up back at the list of shows.
I've resorted to the clear operation... much smarter way and no penalty if you time it wrong. But this whole display the banner biz is really an enfuriating design--and it sticks around too long. It is one of the worst and most intrusive "features" ever with TiVo.
I meant to post about this! Kind of forget about it until I hit play on a show. I agree though it can be very annoying.
Funny about the time - I normally just don't look up there but I'm the same way as the OP - I have to turn my alarm clock around when I go to bed so I don't sit up all night watching the minutes pass. :D
I don't know who thought leaving the banner there was a good idea. If you're choosing to play a recorded show, you know what it's about. Sometimes I just don't care, I know the show and want to get right to it. Sometimes I think I can be patient, but even several seconds can seem like an eternity when something's in the way of your view. :(
Pushing the right arrow will adjust it so the info is out of the way, but the annoying thing is pushing info will expand it instead of removing it completely. Oh well!

Maki, thank you, thank you. I'm glad someone else understands my avoiding time fixation (I wonder if there's a clinical term-- it would probably be something like "chronophobia"). My understanding wife kindly indulges me-- I've put a black cardboard piece over her alarm-- she can lift it up and see what time it is-- but I have no risk of seeing it! We also have a postcard over the kitchen's stove clock, which glows brightly and would otherwise shine up the stairs on the way to the bathroom-- or when there for a middle of the night snack. And the time display on VCRs when we used them or the front of TiVos is always OFF (don't even remember of TiVo shows the time, probably not).
In any event, you're right-- I forgot about the right arrow technique to vanish the info... but at this point, pressing CLEAR just after the program starts playing does the trick. Along with "avert the eyes".
