I want to connect Tivo to PC using crossover cable so that I can telnet into TIVO. I do not want to use any router/gatway/switches or anything like that

Here is how I want to set up the physical connections:
Tivo -> USB to Ethernet -> crossover cable -> Network Card on PC

So that I can telnet on PC to connect to Tivo. I have added following line to rc.sysinit.author

tnlited 23 /bin/bash -login &

Looks like you have the wiring right. You'll probably have to set the IP addresses for the PC and TiVo manually, since you'll have no DHCP server.

I have a similar question, but don't care about telnet, I just want to direct connect my tivo to my pc, without having to buy a router. Can I do that by manually setting the IP address on the tivo? and how do I do that? Anything else I need to do? or is it time to run the store to buy a router?

Are you trying to use the PC as a router by setting up Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)? If so, get that set up first.

The TiVo now defaults to zeroconf so if you set the PC up to do the same, or use ICS, you do not need to set a manual IP on the TiVo.

The price of routers have really dropped and the money to buy one would be worth it. Go get a router.
