Keep losing connection to Tivo when using Tivo-to-go

I am unable to ping the machine and I have to either unplug the Netgear USB adaptor and/or restart the Tivo.

Sometimes when I unplug the adaptor, my Tivo crashes and reboots itself.

I never have issues when using normal Tivo functions or playing Music through it.

Its only when I am copying programs to my PC.

I have the latest Desktop 2.3 with the plus activated.
I believe I have the latest Tivo software on the Tivo also.

Any ideas ?

What model Netgear adapter do you have? Wired/wireless?

It may not be network related since as I say over here:
http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=280599

I something to add but not a fix.

I've been using TTG for ages with complete success. I pull shows to my PC and pull them back to my TiVo.

Recently I've been pulling a LOT of mgeg2 shows to my Series2. Since I got my Series3 all I really use my S2 for is TTG especially for other content... i.e. files I've transcoded from other formats (AVI, MOV etc) to mpeg2 but also shows I like save and rewatch (Mythbusters, Lost etc).

*Here's the new info*: I occasionally lose the connection to my PC which shows at the bottom of the "Now Playing on TiVo" menu. BUT I can still connect to Photos and Music on the same PC.

The only way I've found I can restore is to go to "Messages and Setup" "Restart or Reset System"

This isn't a 'fix' since I can't stop it from happening and it's not a lot of info because I don't know what causes the loss of connection. BUT it's more info and info is good.

Any more ideas folks?

Have you verified that the problem can't be fixed by rebooting the PC and/or stopping and restarting the various Tivo services (particularly Tivo Beacon)?

EDIT: I ask because I have seen this as well and have never restarted my Tivo, only rebooted the PC.

Yep. Doesn't help.

You know, I'm having the exact same problem, and I posted about it a day or two ago. So far, no one has posted a reply.

You know the funny thing about this is that music and photos publish just fine. I don't understand how it can be a network problem if those files are so easily transferred. I realize that they are smaller than the mpeg2 files I pull of the TiVo, but c'mon!

Anyway, I hope someone has an idea.

You folks need to answer Greg's questions if you actually want help. The generic comments and griping don't provide any useful information that warrants a reply.

Well we folks can't answer for mwhaley and there's really no indication that he or Greg is even reading. I provided some useful information that could help zero in on what the root of the problem is. In fact it points in a direction other than the adapter (i.e. connection is not lost and device link in "Now Playing" is restored when TiVo is restarted). Neither does it look like griping.

If you really wanted to help you provide something other than pedantry. Anything really useful to add?

There are lots of people having similar problems but nothing concrete to try and work around it. At base it is probably another 8.1 issue, but why some people have the trouble and others don't isn't obvious. Knowing the software version of the TiVo, what make, model and version number adapter is being used, how it is connected into the home network and what other equipment is running might tease out a common thread.

If it is an 8.1 problem, the fix is the upcoming software update, but if only certain adapters are susceptible, then people would at least know they could change adapters as a workaround or fix to use if they don't feel like waiting. If it impacts all models and adapters equally, then there isn't much that can be done. At present, I have no clue which of those scenarios is true.

That is why I asked. I think Greg is reading, and will answer when he has something meaningful he can contribute. Giving good information means there is a better chance someone will have something meaningful to say.

Here is my setup:

TiVo Series 2 box
Dell Computer (160 gb of disk space, 1 gig of memory)
Running Windows XP SP2
TiVo To Go software 2.3a
TiVo Firmware version: 8.1
3Com Wireless router
Linksys Wireless USB Network adapter. 802.11b (i know, it's old)

You should also know that the router is in the same room as the TiVo and they are about 7-10 feet apart. Let me know if that is helpful in some way. Thanks!

certain versions of that wireless adapter have a known problem that TiVo can do something about. You should look that information up. It would also be good to know the last three digits of the software version number of the TiVo.

I have the same problem.
I can not access my recorded programs via tivo desktop 2.3a.
Only a reboot of the tivo box fixes the problem.
I can stream music/photos no problem.

I've got a series2 tivo not sure the software. assumably the latest...
wired linksys bfsr(?)40 networking

would love a solution to this...

I believe this is a bug in the current version of the Tivo software, On the support forums at Tivo.com there are many people with the same problem. I have it also and have to reboot my Tivos every couple of days to get "Tivo to go" to work.... here is a link http://forums.tivo.com/pe/action/forums/displaypost?postID=10279360

Thanks! That is useful. I agree with your assessment that it's a SW bug. Primarily because you don't lose network connectivity or Music and Pic connectivity and it restores on reset.

The latest software I have ends with 540. I don't think that's the most recent version, but I'm not sure.

In addition, I've looked everywhere for issues with this particular router, but other than transfer speeds, I can find no concrete evidence. Perhaps someone could point me in the right direction?

Adding that your TiVo is a 540 model from your last post.

Still needed is the model number and version number of your wireless adapter. They should be on the device itself.

Ok. The wireless adapter is a Linksys WUSB11 Wireless-B USB Network Adapter version 2.6.

In case your wondering, the router is a 3Com OfficeConnect Wireless 11g Cable/DSL Gateway.

Thanks!

Darn, I was hoping you would say 2.5 or 3.0. TiVo phone support has a fix for prism2 chipset based adapter issues for this kind of problem. Unfortunately, your adapter isn't the one that has the help available.

Sorry, I was almost sure that was your problem.

I am having the same problem. I have spent hours on the phone with Tivo support, and they have admitted to me that the problem is a "known issue" related to Tivo Software update version 8.1. Also, they are fixing it but not until the next software update, for which they have no release date. Tivo is offering no interim fix, and they are doing nothing for the customers that are inconvenienced by this.

If someone has any idea how to fix this I'm open to it. However, so far, I am just so fed up with Tivo that I'm not sure its even worth it.
