I have a Tivo unit that has an audio problem. (I don't have the model# handy)Everything works great except for the fact that the audio is very low & the Tv volume has to be cranked up quite a bit just to get some sound. Is there a chip that might need replacing within the Tivo unit? Is it worth fixing? It does have 5: Product Lifetime on the unit. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I doubt your problem is a defective chip. Tell us more about the Tivo and how it's connected to the rest of your system ....
* Brand/model Tivo?
* Brand/model TV?
* How is the Tivo connected to the TV (cables, connectors, inputs/outputs)?
* Are you using the RF coax connection to the TV, or RCA (red/white cable) for audio?
* What's your video source (cable, cable box, satellite receiver)?
* How is the video source connected to your Tivo?
* If you're using a cable box, are you sure that its volume is set properly?

Hi! I don't have the unit in front of me, but it's a Philips Tivo (black) series one which states Quantum Quickview in the left corner. It has 5:Prod Lifetime. This is the first time I fired it up. It's a unit that was going to possibly be scrapped. So, I hooked it up just like my other unit, the basic hook ups, phone line, RCA cables (out to tv) RF coax, you name it. It didn't contain drives, so I added two new 80gb Maxtor Quickview imaged drives & went through the entire set up. Everything worked beautifully except for the fact that the audio is barely present. It is hooked up correctly, so maybe I need to tug where the RCA's are plugged in to see where the short is located, if any. I know it's an audio probelm because my other Tivo works great when hooked back up. Any suggestions? Thansk for your help, btw.

Try looking inside on the main board to see if those RCA jacks have cracked solder joints. If so, you can touch them with a soldering iron. I've fixed a few pieces of gear this way.

Ok, last night I did a few tests. First I looked to see how the RCA output solder joint connections were holding up & from what I can see, them seem to be fine. I hooked up the Philips Tivo mod# PTV300 Series One as normal & the audio still very low in volume. So, I wiggled the RCA connections a bit & no result. I then tried the top section of the RCA output connections, wiggled them - still the same. However, the video out works on both upper & lower. Also, noticed by disconnecting the R & L RCA's, one at a time, I can hear possibly some video noise or something coming through the line, similar to static.
What I'm wondering is, maybe the RF IN/OUT box on the PC board is bad. I do see two potentiometers inside this box & it looks like it can be pried open. Maybe one is video, the other audio, or maybe one is for the R channel & the other for the L channel. The part# TMDH2-011A (992816B). Do you think if I replace this, the problem may be solved??
