I'd like to choose which MPEG2 decoder Windows Media Player uses. Is there a registry entry or option for that?

The XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility shows two MPEG2 decoders. Both are MCE & MP10 compatible. Media Player always chooses the one at the top of the list even if I select the second one as "Preferred" (I think the "Preferred" only applies to syncing with a portable device).

The only way I can get MP to use the second one is to rename the .ax file of the first decoder.

I can use the second decoder in the GraphEdit program, so I know it works.

You can use a filter manager program like this one....

to lower the merit on the codec you don't want to use.

Note: A reboot might be required for the change to take effect.

Dan, Thanks for the pointer!!

That utility did the trick. The top decoder had a merit of 0x00800001 and the second one was 0x00800000.

Increasing the merit of the second one now makes it the chosen one for MP.
