I'm thinking about getting another Tivo to network (wireless network is already in place) into the bedroom so we can watch our Tivo'd shows there. I don't want to use that 2nd Tivo as anything but a networked player. In thinking how that would or wouldn't work I thought of an interesting question:
What would happen if, when upgrading my current Tivo to a bigger drive, I copy the original image onto 2 drives? I then put 1 drive back into my original (lifetime membership) Tivo and the other into the bedroom Tivo.
Would that work? What the network get too confused? I don't really want to pay for a monthly or lifetime membership for just the ability to play the main Tivo stuff in another room.
Any thoughts?

I too had been concocting plans of my own to accomplish the same task to no avail. I gave up my master dual TiVO plan in favor of slingbox which will serve me better by allowing access anywhere anytime via the internet. Granted I’ll be using my laptop in the spare room and have yet to find out how well the picture quality will be. If adequate a connection to the TV can be accomplished. NO recurring fees.
Good luck with the swap & switch.

Any thoughts? No, it would not work...
It's not possible without a subscription, in order to unlock the MRV/Home Media features, but that's only $6.95 per month, since you already have a Lifetime unit...
Plus, any discussion involving trying to get free TiVo service, a.k.a., theft of service, is banned from being discussed on this forum.

1st - It's a subscription not a membership. Neither you nor your Tivo belong to any organization because of any payments you've made to Tivo.
2nd - Subscription status is not stored on the hard drive.
3rd - Any hard drive from one S2 Tivo (or software image from a S2 Tivo) will not function in any other identical model Tivo unless a clear and delete everything is performed.
There are many different devices that can be used to broadcast the A/V signal (wireless or wired) from any dvr/vcr/dvd player to television in another room.

A slingbox is a cool device and those that have them love them, though they typically got it for out of house viewing. For in house viewing it is a little weak though and something like an COAX broadcaster ( www.crossbarmedia.com) will let you use any TV set in the house with a decent picture.
The main drawback to all this is that this type of setup means the one TiVo is dedicated to whatever is being watched even in the other room from the slingbox or other broadcast method. When you think about it a slingbox at 200$ comes out to more than 2 years subscription at 6.95 - I would go with a cheap if not free Single tuner box in the next room and then have the ability for two different shows to be watched at the two TVs and have an enother tuner to handle conflicts.

Assuming they are like model TiVos (unlike models generally don't like software for another model DVR), you can use the HDD from the one DVR in the other, but it won't do anything until a C&DE is performed.
Your "lifetime" subscription is tied to the TSN of the DVR you bought the lifetime subscription it is for. Period. (the subscription status is if fact stored on a server in Alviso CA somewhere)
The second DVR needs its own subscription to do what you want. Period.
If you don't want to but another TiVo subscription, you need to look at non Tivo products.
