hey guys. I 've read several threads on converting the files and for some reason each explanation of what to do has not worked correctly. I was wondering if anyone knew of any programs besides dr divx that i could use to compress the .tivo files to something smaller such as mpeg. I dont really care what the file turns out to be. I'm not trying to put it on an ipod or anything. I'll be happy just as long as they arent a gigabyte a piece and will play on my computer. Thanks for any help

Download DirectShow Dump. (You need MS .NET Framework 1.1 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=262D25E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3) installed as well for this app to work. As well as TivoDesktop 2.x). Use it to convert your .tivo files to .mpg files.

Now you can do whatever you want. I use DivX Converter. A little simpler to use than Dr. Divx. It is bundled with the new DivX for Windows 6.3 package.

What Windracer said.

(With this program, you have a 15 day free trial period. You have to register for a free trial key to save your entire processed file - otherwise you get only half-hour video out.)

Also, you won't need the .Net Framework 1.1 or the Direct Show Dump.
Although, those are free.

But what video format are you saving as using VR that is smaller than the source? (cutting out commercials doesn't count! :))

Tivo files already are MPEG-2 files.

True. I was confused by the OP's statement as well:

I was wondering if anyone knew of any programs besides dr divx that i could use to compress the .tivo files to something smaller such as mpeg.

So I just threw out VRD as a way to "convert" .tivo files to .mpeg.

Of course, another alternative would be TiVo Desktop 2.3 Plus, which has the conversion to MPEG-4 and H.264 for mobile devices, but that qualifies as smaller file sizes.

Yeah, I always forget the obvious. :)

One major advantage to VideoReDo over DirectShow Dump is that VRD also repairs errors in the file while it's processing. This can help if you plan to use the file for DVD authoring or playback on any sort of hardware device.
