View Full Version : 100% CPU utilization on Tivo Desktop

Anyone else getting reliably strange behavior from Tivo Desktop? I left it sitting for a few hours and it had pegged my CPU. Totally unresponsive. Even when it shouldn't have been doing a transfer. NVidia's desktop software noticed that it had gone stupid and offered to leave it alone hoping it would help. Given the absolutely lackluster performance of file transfers to/from the tivo surely it's not really busy but a conflict of some kind or bad code (on Tivo's part).
Anyone with similar experiences with this?

The TiVo server does go into a loop on startup sometimes. I think it is a conflict with something on the computer, but I have not figured out what yet. The TiVo server does not start up until you log on to your account. I have found that if the computer is allowed to boot and you do not log in for a few more minutes, it usually does not go into a loop (using all the CPU).

I have several things that run at startup and logon (I have mine set to autologon) and nearly every reboot something doesn't come up right! The Tivo server is better now than it was in earlier versions, but I think the processing it has to do, along with running WindowWasher (tempfile, cookie, history, etc) cleaner, startup virus scan, live updates that poll at startup, etc, etc are just more than poor Windows can handle.
I try to always be around for restarts to make sure everything comes up right, killing the offenders with Task Manager so the rest can start up.

You do know that I was talking about the desktop software, not the server piece. Truth is, it's the one part that works right. Now you've got me scared.

It's all related, and apparently written by the same sloppy coders.
My apologies in advance if any of them are here!

Actually, come to think of it, I have seen that problem as well. I had a few transfers going and when I wnet back to check on them the log in process was real slow. I found the CPU was at 100%, but the transfers were still proceeding, so I left it like that. After the transfers finished, I just rebooted and then everything was back to normal.

Hey, I agree that the video and sound need to be muxed. But why do it on the 200mhz processor and not the pc after/during transfer?

In my case, I know that is in the Server/Transfer system. I started having the problem with 2.3 and then downloaded 2.3a to see if it fixed anything. It didn't. I don't have any problems until I transfer files - manually with the desktop or auto without. It will successfully down load everything but when the transfer finishes, TivoServer sucks up 100% CPU. The other point is that this is on a motherboard with an NVIDIA chipset and AMD processor. When I try the same setup on another computer which has an Intel chipset and processor, it doesn't happen.
