Why would you even hook your tivo up to the phone line in the first place? Updates come down from the heavens, not over the phone line. You could force a call if need be, but generally, there is no reason to be hooked up to the phone line unless you WANT DTV to spy on you.

1) The phone call initiates installation of an update even though the update otherwise is downloaded via satellite.
2) To order PPV's from the receiver, the phone line needs to be connected so that billing info for the ordered PPV's can be regularly sent to DirecTV.
3) Some of us aren't paranoid.

I'm not a Neilson Media Research Ratings household, nor can I be.
If DirecTV is keeping track of what I watch, and that plays into how many people are watching and helps keep a good show around a little longer, then I'm all for it.
Same thing with TiVo, they are keeping track of what is being watched as well, and again, I'm all for it.
Anything I can do to keep a good show on the air.
