I have a Tivo 540 series...I want to make sure I purcase the right machine to burn dvd...is Humax series 595 the right one? Or is there something else that has been found to be better?
I'd love to have something where I don't have to record an entire program that's on my Tivo, and where I can set bookmarks as necessary.
That being said, I'll take whatever is best for recording on the Tivo

The Humax (and any other DVD unit I presume) do not really let you edit programs. You must record the whole program, unless the program is larger than a disc. Then it splits the disc into parts. Chapters are inserted every 5 minutes. You cannot control chapter setting.

Avoid HUMAX at all costs.

Personaly I recommend the Pioneer DVR-810H or DVR-57H. They're 2xx based units, which are speedier.
The Humax DRT400 & DRT800, and the Toshiba RS-TX20 and RS-TX60, are all pretty much the same box - and they're 5xx units, which are slower. But, feature-wise, the software on all of them is basically the same.

Those both look great when I searched on-line, but are out of my price-range ( what my research account will cover). Are there any other suggestions that are stand-alones, since I have the Tivo already?
Also, is Humax that bad?
Thanks.

If you add a network card to your 540, you can use TivoToGo to extract the recordings to a PC. Then VideoReDo ($50) will allow you to edit the recordings and save in a format ready for recording to DVD. You'll then need a DVD recorder for your PC ($40 up).
Check in the Tivo Home Media forum for more detailed descriptions of the process.

I have a DRT800 I will sell you if you really want one.
I have both a Humax DRT800 and a Toshiba RS-TX20. Both are slower than my 240 series unit, but as fast as any 540 unit out there. I've never had the DVD burning issues a lot of people's units seem to have been stricken by. Both have operated flawlessly for over 2 years.
I AM starting to think I have one too many DVD burning SD TiVos, though ... and that Toshiba has free Basic subscription capability for the life of the device ;)
