View Full Version : Green screen saying "a severe error has occured"

I got home last night to find that Tivo is definitely poorly!!

It tries to power up, gets past the "Welcome, powering up..." screen, gets to the "a few seconds please" and then goes to a green screen saying that "a severe error has occurred, to leave it all plugged in and if it doesn't repair itself in 24 hours to contact customer support.

I called Tivo but they can't do anything and can't even recommend somewhere to repair it in London.

Has anyone come across this before? If it really is dead then does anyone know any repair places in SW London?

Yes, a quick search of the forum would reveal that this is known as the Green Screen of Death (GSOD). It means that tiVo's discovered errors on it's video file system and is attempting to repair them.

Often, TiVo can do this by itself and after a few hours, normal service is resumed. If however this screen remains after 24 hours it's probable that your hard drive is broken. In this case you either need to get a new hard drive and perform a "backup", or buy a pre-installed disk - available on ebay or from some people on this forum.
