Can the HR10-250 be used to record OTA HD without a current DirecTV subscription?

You can view OTA channels without a DirecTV subscription, including the 30-minute Live TV Recording Buffer, but you cannot set up any scheduled recordings. This is primarily because you won't have any Guide Data.

Lack of guide data won't prevent you from recording manually. However, not having the DVR tier active on your access card will prevent the HDTivo from recording or using any of the other Tivo special functions like wishlists and season passes (no guide data won't help you there either). You need an active DTV subscription to enable the DVR tier so the answer is - yes, you need a DirecTV subscription in order to record shows.

This is confusing to me. Recording manually is still recording.

So, can you record or not?? Does the HR10-250 act like a non-subscribed Series 1 and allow you to do manual recordings but nothing else???

Or is it strictly a live view with the ability to pause???

You CANNOT RECORD. Only trick play, meaning you can pause, rewind, fast forward. You can't record anything.

Does anybody know if D* has a speical low low cost package that meets there contract requirment? I plan on getting the Series 3 when it comes out, but I want my two HR10s to stay active and want the Sunday ticket each year.

I suppose I should have been a bit clearer in my response. Normally, you will have guide data even without a DTV subscription but you won't have any recording functionality without a subscription PLUS the DVR service. You can't get the DVR service without the subscription, at least not as it currently stands. The DVR service is what activates the Tivo features such as season passes and wishlists. Without it you just have a dual tuner DTV receiver and OTA tuner.

What I meant to imply was that you could still set up manual recordings even if you did not have guide data to use for selecting upcoming shows to record. Normally you would select shows from the guide and set up recordings and season passes accordingly.

However, let's say you were setting up your HDTivo for the first time and the guide data had not yet fully populated and there was an upcoming show that you wanted to record but it hadn't shown up in the guide yet. There's no reason why you couldn't set up that show to record manually, hence my response regarding the ability to record without guide data. I realize it may have been a little off the mark but it was still a valid comment nonetheless. The guide data is not what allows the HDTivo to record, but it certainly makes setting them up much easier.

So in summary, it can be used to pause live TV (30 minute buffer), it can be used as a dual tuner ATSC decoder, and CAN perform manual time recordings only without the benefit of a program guide.

NOOO! NO RECORDINGS, PERIOD.

Only "Trick Play".

Why is this so complicated??

How do you get this? Once the DVR tier falls off, you can't record ANYTHING.

Hey, don't shoot the messenger, I'm only trying to clarify what others are stating can and cannot be done with the unit. If someone claimed it can make homemade ice cream then I would have included that statement as well. I've never tried to record without active service. BTW, can you make mine chocolate chip?
