drive from one model to another

I have a Tivo TCD24004A with a bad drive. I also have a Tivo TCD54004 that I've upgraded in the past, can I use the 54004 image on the new upgraded drive and put it in the 24004 Tivo? Or do I need to find a 24004 image?

You probably will need a 240 image. But it certainly cannot hurt to try the 540 image and see it it works.

So it won't do anything to the hardware (firmware) to try running the 540 image? I'm not going to fry something by using the wrong image?

No, it may just not run properly. Note that you will need to do a "clear and delete everything" to match the image to the box. If you don't do this, you will see and "error 51".

just sits on the Welcome booting up screen forever. What do you mean by clear and delete everything, that's an option after the machine turns on, right?

Clear and delete is done after the TiVo boots. It apparently does not work using a 540 image on the 240. When you boot, make sure that you do not have anything in the USB ports.
