Hey folks

I have a DirecTivo hard drive (160GB) that I upgraded using an image for the RCA DVR40 box and used succesfully in my DirecTivo box. Now, I want to use it for my new S2 Dual Tuner which comes to me tomorrow.

What is the best way of doing this?? I dont care about the shows on that drive just want to use it as it would give me about 150 hours of recording.

Regards

You should be able to just use the mfs tools to back-up the existing DT harddrive and restore it on the one you pulled from the DTiVo.

(Basically treat it like any other drive upgrade. It doesn't matter that the DTiVo drive has stuff on it, it will get overwritten if you use it as the destination drive in an upgrade).

Thanks Jonathan. What are the best guide to use this now. Is it the Weaknees one?

Folks one more question. Just so I can compare; what is the exact line i need when using the weaknees ISO CD for MF tools to copy my original drive files to overwrite the old Directivo hard drive to do a direct copy in one go.

Just use Hinsdale's How To (I'm not as familiar with the Weaknees guide but I'm sure it's akin to "Tivo Backups for Dummies"). All of the commands you need to use are spelled out there.

The Weaknees guide is more up to date than Hinsdale.

mfsbackup -Tao - /dev/hdX | mfsrestore -s 127 - r 4 -xzpi - /dev/hdY

replace hdX (original drive) and hdY (new drive) with the correct names for where the drives are located.

Final question folks. Is it better to do the upgrade before I even start the Tivo unit or once I have set it up and then do the hard drive upgrade?

I always start up a new unit and make sure it is fully operational before I mess with it.

Thanks Gunny. DUDE - I have not seen your ID for ages ever since I upgraded my DirecTV Tivo - your were lots of help in that too :)

While not what the OP asked, I recently got a used TIVO which was not working. Wanted to see if it worked before buying a replacement HDD. Took the original drive for a DTIVO and put it in. It booted up fine. Amusing in seeing all the DirectTV backgrounds on a SA tivo. (Didn't even try to see if it would play a recording - saw the tivo was functional and just pulled it out.)
