I just got my new 500GB drive in from Outpost and want to replace my ailing 250GB drive that came with my HR10-250 originally. I am going to use the InstantCake software for this operation...

My question is this: do you format the new drive to Fat32 BEFORE or DURING the InstantCake process? In other words does the new drive have to already be properly formatted before hooking it to the machine you are using with the InstantCake disk, and if so is it OK to format the new drive to Fat32 under XP?

Sorry for the newbie style questions as I have replaced hard drives in computers but never in a Tivo before...just want to make sure I don't screw anything up during the process.

Thanks!

I replaced my original drive last weekend using the InstantCake software downloaded from the PTVupgrade website. There is no need to format the new drive. You just have to make sure the new drive and your computer's CDROM are connected to the motherboard's IDE connectors as specified in the instructions on the website and boot your computer from the CD that you copied the InstantCake image to. The software takes care of the rest.

After you reinstall the drive into the HR10-250, you'll need to do a Clear and Delete Everything before you're back in business. You'll also lose channel logos but I believe you'll get those back if/when the 6.3 software update comes out.

Just put the drive in your computer and follow the Instantcake directions. I recently pulled the 250gb drive straight out of my HD-Tivo and ran the Instantcake software for it so I could use the drive in my R-10. It worked perfect, and this was a drive that had a lot of recordings still on it from my HD-Tivo.
