So I purchased a new TCD649080 and a blank 750 GB seagate drive from Newegg. I have attempted to backup / restore the factory 80 GB drive to the new 750 GB drive without any success. The result every time is TiVo getting to the "Almost there..." screen and then rebooting. There is no GSOD.

What's more is that now when I insert the original drive back into the TiVo it also has the same problem. I never modified the original drive, so I'm not sure why it would do that.

In any case, here is what I've done:

The first attempt, I put the new blank drive (750) on the secondary master, and the factory drive (80) on the secondary slave.

I ran the following command using MFSTools 2.0 boot CD downloaded from PVRUpgrade

mfsbackup -ao - /dev/hdd | mfsrestore -s 127 -bzpxi - /dev/hdc

The result was the reboot loop.

I did a bit more reading and found that the MFSTools 2.0 CD has some issues with making swap space, so I followed those posts regarding renumbering partitions to the unused kernel one (4 in this case) and still had no luck.

I've tried a number of flags for backup (-Tao, -F 9999) and restore (-zpxi, -r 0, -r 4, -s 512), but I am still getting the perpetual reboot.

I have also tried Emergency Reinstall, Mfs Check, and Mfs Cleanup on both 750 and 80. The 750 shows the GSOD for maybe 5 minutes or so then starts the reboot cycle. The 80 just continues the reboot cycle.

Has anyone else had this problem and/or is willing to help me debug the situation?

Has anyone else had this problem and/or is willing to help me debug the situation? It won't work without -r 4. It also won't work with swap > 127MB unless you initialize the swap space separately with tpip or mkswap.

I'd suggest you follow the directions here (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=141538). Unlike Hinsdale, these are known to be up to date for large drives. Some might quible about the swap size and GSOD issues (see two schools of thought (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=3825639#post3825639)), but the instructions there will work if you follow them carefully.

Edit: On a more careful reading, I see your original drive somehow got trashed too. You may need to find yourself a clean tivo image for your hardware. InstantCake is one option.

The OP had the original drive in the PC as hdd which is slave he needs to put the jumper back to master single drive when in the TiVo.

The recommended instructions are here:

http://tivo.upgrade-instructions.com/index.php

Use the weaknees or ptvupgrade LBA48 boot CD with mfstools.

Is it possible that you allowed Windows to boot with the TiVo drive connected? If so, you will need to use MakeTiVoBootable to fix the drive. Once you get the original drive back to working you can redo the backup using the above instructions.

No, both drives were on cable select and the BIOS in m computer detected them properly.

I ended up just downloading the InstantCake ISO to get the drive up and running. It worked well.

No, I have a SATA drive for my C drive, and I had it unplugged while I was doing the upgrade.

My DVD burner was hda; CD drive was hdb; 750 HD was hdc; and 80 HD was hdd;
