View Full Version : I Have a TiVo in My Kitchen...

Last week, I gave into the temptation to purchase one of the new Series 2 Dual Tuner TiVos to replace...or so I thought...a Series 2 140 hour that I had purchased less than a year ago. Why? I'm not quite sure...except that the Dual Tuner was a great deal, and well, it would after all take care of those occasional scheduling conflicts.
I got the Dual Tuner today, unpacked it, and set about swapping it out with the current Series 2 in the bedroom.
I soon realized that I really didn't have a home for the displaced TiVo box I was replacing, and since it was already effectively prepaid for service for some time to come, I decided to put it in the one area in my home that seemed like a good fit: the kitchen. I just shoved the can opener and the toaster aside, and there it went.
I've told a couple of friends that I have a TiVo in my kitchen ("you're going to hook up TiVo to that small TV?"), and of course, they think I'm nuts.
To that, I had to explain that TiVo boxes are kind of like money and hard drive space. You can never have enough.

I have a TiVo in my kitchen too. Everywhere I have a TV I have a TiVo. (10 total)
Fantastic! Every tv should have one. Although it looks like you've lost a bit of counter space. Can a TiVo operate on its side? Maybe you could stand it on its side flush against the wall. ;)

Yeah! Looks great! And why not? I'd sure love a Tivo with every TV, and a TV in every room! Ideally that would be the way to go.
So, I guess Tivo really is the greatest thing since sliced bread ... or at least the greatest thing beside sliced bread. :)
You should be able to put your TV on top of the Tivo.

Better than sliced bread. Do I need sliced bread? No. Do I need Tivo? YES! At least if I want to watch TV (I mean I could switch to Netflix plus play more games, read more books, etc., but for TV...)
You should be able to put your TV on top of the Tivo.
That deters from the "coolness" of the cupboard mounted TV.

Shoot, I've had a tivo in my kitchen for a year! In fact, effectively two! I can watch either the Tivo which is physically in the kitchen (hidden in a cabinet) or I can switch my TV input to watch the Tivo in my living room. All my family members enjoy munching and watching the latest recording of Frasier or Home Improvement. Nice!

Well, darn. I thought I was onto something, but you all beat me to it. If nothing else, I can tell my friends I'm not the only one.
The only thing left to do now is put a TiVo in the bathroom.
Not exactly sure how to pull that off...

My main family room has two TiVos - I sometimes pull it out to the playfort* and we do "Movie Night" out there  The kids love not being scolded about popcorn crumbs or candy on the sofa and then sleeping outside afterwards.
*it is a big playfort I built myself.

I already have a TV/VCR combo in there,
just have to dump a show to VHS prior to taking a bath.
I'd be afraid of the steam causing corrosion in the TiVo, so for now, the VHS option is just fine.

Mount it so the fan is blowing the warm air over the toilet seat. That alone would be worth the price of monthly service.

Tivo is wonderful in the kitchen, especially if you set it up to record cooking shows!

I wish they had a mini Tivo that I could put on my desk with my little 13" desk TV.

How about a Tivo "client"? A small box that streams media from a Tivo Server located elsewhere in the home. Then you could have one or two servers able to record all your shows, and then you can watch them anywhere you have a TV and a (small) client box.

I have been trying to figure out how to do that. Choices seem to be Slingbox, some very weak wireless TV offerings, or going down the (expensive) path of structured wiring. There are issues with all of these. I do have a TIVO that doesn't record though I just use it to transfer shows to the kids playroom. Until I can find something better it will have to do.

www.crossbarmedia.com for a solution using existing coax wiring
