It would be great if a tivo box could decode captioning. Currently tivo relies on a tv to do that and just passes the signal through. It seems like more and more of us have projection tv's or dumb monitors that that don't have built in tuners.

I recently built a $20K home theater and had to dump my tivo for a sony DVR that had built in decaptioning. I really like the tivo dvr better but captioning was a requirement.

A possibly solution would be an external CC decoder inline between the TiVo and display.

Yes a CC decoder might work, but you don't see many for sales there days since TV's have to build them in. I'm also not sure that there are any cc decoders on the market for high def (i.e., looking forward to series 3).

Personally I solved my problem buy just buying a DVR with CC built in (i.e., Sony's box) but personally I'd switch it out with a tivo box in a second if the tivo box addressed this issue.

Well, since the S3 is designed for HD, and a lot of HD displays don't have a CC decoder, perhaps the S3 will have one built in.
