I just upgraded my Tivo Series 2 80G DT to a WD 320G drive and now I hear the hard drive going all the time, even when in standby and not recording anything. Is this normal and does the drive always run no matter what? I don't remember hearing the original drive when the system was in standby.

Yes this is normal but your original drive more than likely had acoustic management enabled and the new one does not.

Since you say you used a western digital drive download the hitachi feature tool from: http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm and use this program to enable the accoustic management of your new Western digital drive.

btw, how often do you have to replace the drive since it runs 24/7? It seems to me it won't last very long with it doing seeks and stuff 24/7

My original drive went for 3 years non stop and was still fine when I replaced it I just wanted more space.

I have seen where others have only gotten a year out of theres but this is a rare occurance I believe.

My drive did the same noise at first, but I think it's just writing down information onto the drive at first. After the first 20 mins, the drive quieted down and now it doesn't make a sound unless it's recording.
