View Full Version : What is truth regarding programming commitments?
I just called the customer retention number to ask about commitments. They said with used owned receivers there will not be a commitment. But new owned receivers would have a commitment. I had emailed them about this earlier and got this reply:
The annual programming commitment does not apply to additional or replacement receivers that customers purchased at retail. However, a programming commitment will be applied if the receiver to be added on the account is a leased receiver.
So what is the truth? If I buy a new receiver on Ebay wiill there be a programming commitment? If I buy a used receiver on Ebay wiill there be a programming commitment?
If you purchase a receiver from D* or an authorized D* retailer, the eq is considered "leased". Leased receivers require a programming commitment. If you purchase the receiver via other means, ie. Ebay, then you own the receiver, and no programming commitment is required. This only applies to receivers bought after March 1, 2006.
Either way, when you activate any receiver with D* they will automatically view it as being leased, so if you feel you own the receiver, you'll need to dispute this with them to make sure you aren't penalized if you never give the receiver back.

It's important to be careful, because I just activated a refurbished unit (I simply swapped the access card) and my account showed a 2 year commitment on the website.
I called them back and finally got them to remove the contract.

Hi folks,
Where on the website are you seeing these commitments listed? Is it under "My Programming" or "My Account" or what? I don't see the word commitment listed anywhere. I hope that means I'm not working under a commitment but I just want to make sure I'm not looking on the wrong page.
Thanks

D* has a commitment on all equipment activations, always has, unless it's an in-warranty replacement.
These days, if you buy used receivers, you get a new card...and with the card....commitment!
BUYING a receiver at retail is not possible. Read the fine print in those best buy ads. you're not BUYING that $99 h20.

the fun part is trying to convince some of them that the new replacement shouldn't have a new 24 month deal :)

It took a couple months, but I got DTV customer retention
to remove the 24 mo. contract on my account. My old 12
mo. contract expired in June of this year. Fun stuff.
I intend on putting a larger HD in my old HDVR2, which is
currently not in use. Then I will store my current R10 and
use the old HDVR full-time.
When I activate the HDVR2, should I ...
Use the smart card from my current R10 in the HDVR2?
Or use the old smart card which I only used in the HDVR2?
