View Full Version : Signal problem into HDTiVo

I occasionally have problems where I'm unable to tune in certain channels, and I'm beginning to think that it's not a weather-related problem, but instead something wrong between the receiver and the dish.

First, my setup is a triple-LNB dish, with each of its four lines split, and those resulting lines mirrored (so that each of the split lines goes into the same input on the multiswitch) onto two 4x8 multiswitches.

What I can see is that according to the test channels in the 490's, I can see: 490 - "Test 1 SAT A (101) Odd Txp 13V"
491 - "Test 2 SAT A (101) Even Txp 18V"
492 - "Searching for signal on: Satellite In 1"
493 - "Test 4 SAT B (119) Even Txp 18V"
494 - "Test 5 SAT C (110) Even Txp 18V"

Extrapolating from this, it would seem that I'm missing the odd transponders on the 119° satellite.

I currently have only one cable hooked into the HDTiVo, but when I've tested this more thoroughly in the past, I've received the same results on the second input as well, so the problem doesn't seem to be in the receiver.

Before I call DirecTV to have someone fix what's wrong (since I have the protection plan), I'd like to see if I could get a better idea of where the problem might be. The last time I reported this problem, all they did was try to realign the dish which did improve the signal strength problems I was having on the 101° satellite, but didn't help channel 492.

I'm guessing that it could be a problem either in the 4x8 multiswitch to which the HDTiVo is connected, or in the one line from the satellite that would carry that particular set of channels. (As I understand it, each of those test channels would be on a separate line from the dish, except for 493 and 494 which are stacked together.)

I can check to see whether it's the 4x8 multiswitch by swapping the HDTiVo's connection to the other multiswitch and see if there's a change in behavior, but other than that, I'm guessing that they'd have to come and do some replacing of equipment or lines.

Are the splitters high frequency splitters that pass DC only on one leg?

Check the cables connected to the 13v/22kHz input on each multiswitch and the cable that is connected to the splitter feeding those inputs. And ensure that the same inputs on the switches are connected to the same splitter.

How can I tell? I saw that they say "5-2300 MHz" and "All Ports Power Pass", but I'm not sure how to interpret that.

Yes, they are connected to the same splitter.

I also just tried swapping the HDTiVo's connection from one 4x8 multiswitch to the other and I didn't see any change in behavior, so it's probably not with either of these two multiswitches.

After reading dmurphy's similar thread (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=310665), I wonder if that's the same problem I have. Since my splitters may not be limiting the power to one side, perhaps something had gotten messed up because of that.

You will need a splitter that passes power on one port. It may be labeled "One Port Passive" You will need something like http://www.solidsignal.com/prod_display_print.asp?PROD=SP2HF1

I pointed out the splitters to the guy who came today and he assured me that they were the right ones.

Anyway, he found out that the LNB needed to be replaced as one of its multiswitch's outputs was dead and he tweaked the alignment on the dish to boost my numbers a bit more. As of now, all is well.
