View Full Version : The Ad that Tivo SHOULD be Running

I've been trying to decide why people don't get that the Cable Company PVRs and Satellite Company PVRs just aren't that good a deal. Part of it is that most of the things they lack are things you wouldn't notice if you'd never had a Tivo before. Then it occurred to me that none of these will let you copy an MPEG-2 or other video file to them, so that showing your home movies requires you to have a DVD player on each TV and putting all your stuff onto multiple DVDs.
So, it seems to me that Tivo should be able to take advantage of that, and create an ad in split screen showing two families recording some event. The Tivo family then copies the file from the camera to their PC, and then from the PC to their Tivo, and watches it. Meanwhile the family in the other screen has to copy the file, prepare the file to be written to a DVD, write the DVD, and then carry it to the TV and figure out which control to change the TV to the DVD input, and then get the DVD control to play the DVD...
Seems like that would be a rather effective sales tool, and with the holidays coming up could actually drive some significant sales.
FWIW,

or with my TiVo DVD burner model - show a family just hooking the Camera up to the TiVo. starting a recording of the video while family enjoys it. Then at the end Aunt Mabel says that Uncle Joe would love to see that. - Hit the burn to DVD menu and cut to the big goodbye hugs scene (show that in real time this is just 15 minutes later) where the DVD is handed to Aunt Mabel.

It's probably quicker to burn a DVD and watch it on the TV thru the DVD player when you take into account how long it will take to transfer the files from the camera to the PC and from the PC to the TiVo.
This ad of yours can also show the TiVo family figuring out how to hook the TiVo to their home computer network(which they may or may not even have). You can also show the TiVo family paying $12.95/month to TiVo.
Make sure the ad also shows the DVD burning family putting the DVD into their permanent family video library.

Plus I keep family videos on my TiVo DVRs so they can be seen at any time by anyone.
This ad of yours can also show the TiVo family figuring out how to hook the TiVo to their home computer network(which they may or may not even have). well if they had to do that each and every time that would be legitimate. How about showing the DVD burning family struggling with the DVD software?
You can also show the TiVo family paying $12.95/month to TiVo. that comes in the closing line "Subscription to TiVo service required" Note my example above though wherein I use a TiVo DVD buner model - that can be done with just TiVo Basic and also no cost for a PC either.
Make sure the ad also shows the DVD burning family putting the DVD into their permanent family video library. and then hunting for it and yelling at the kids because they did not put it back in a case and now it is scratched up ;) while the TiVo family is just hitting the remote control when Uncle Joe stops by and complains that Aunt Mabel lost the DVD.
I think they should also run some ads that make sure people understand that their generic DVR isn't a TiVo and then explain these advantages.

The DVD burning family have probably used the DVD burning software before and wouldn't be struggling with it.
Also show the TiVo family yelling - OH SH*T !! The hard drive in the TiVo died !! when Uncle Joe stops by and aunt Mabel laughing her a$$ off.

You could show all the cable lines down outside and cut to the TiVo family watching shows recorded over the last few days while the Cable DVR struggles to connect to the mothership.
Or like in my case we watched shows while the power and cable were out one icy morning as the UPS chugged along powering the set and TiVo.

A dead drive is about as equally useful to both types of dvrs. Sure, the CableCo will happily replace the whole dvr, but they can't replace the lost content.

Umm and the TiVo family had not used TiVo desktop ever before ?
and I have lost hard drives and DVD burners in my PCs and yet to loose any hardware in my TiVo DVRs.

Yeah, Tivo should definately not advertise any of their features that not all of their subscribers use.
Their new advertising slogan can be "Tivo! That box that sits unplugged in the corner doing nothing, for the low, low price of 19.95 a month!!!"

I didn't say doing nothing. I was just mentioning to ZeroTiVo that not TiVo owners have the TiVo box hooked up to their home network.

Yeah, well lots of people don't use wish lists, so can't advertise that. Same goes for KidZone and Guru guides. The people that don't watch live TV don't use the Live TV buffer, so "pausing live tv" is out.
I could probably go on, but you get the point - there aren't any features that EVERY Tivo family uses, so advertising a feature because not all families use it would be foolish.
