View Full Version : My tivo menus don't work

I noticed this morning ( thanks to my son complaining ) that my Humax DVD-R tivo isn't responding to the TIVO button anymore. It's behaving quite oddly.

the TIvo button makes the sound as though it's going to the tivo menu, but nothing happens.

The right arrow brings up the banner, the left arrow makes it disapper, but the left arrow won't do anything else.

I can FF/RW/Pause/Play just fine. But I can't get to any of the actual MENU screens.

I unplugged the tivo earlier and plugged it back in, thinking that would fix it. We left home, came back an hour later, and it's still doing the same thing.

Any suggestions?

Maybe the remote has been dropped (in water or other liquid) and the button isn't making good contact inside. I've never opened one up, but suspect it has the printed circuit board with gold fingers and the button has a rubber pad the bridges the fingers. They can oxidize or get dirty and stop working.

Just an idea!

I don't think that's it, since the tivo does make the appropriate sound for whatever button you hit. When I hit tivo, it still makes the noise of the tivo menu coming up, but the video doesn't change.

I was just reading some reviews on CNET of the Humax units (interested in getting one) that said there was some problem with the remote and stated that Humax "knows and doesn't care" about the problems. Apparently they'll exchange the units but the problem persists...

Anyone else have a Humax? Experience any problems? I'll probably buy one and take my chances anyway.

I've had one for a couple of years with none of the remote or other problems reported by some owners.

I would try two things that have worked for me in the past with SA S2 units. Sorry, no experience with Humax burners, but this should work for you as well. First, take the batteries out of the remote for ten seconds and replace them. Second, unplug your TiVo unit, let the hard drive spin down for twenty seconds or so and replace the plug back into the unit. This has always worked for me when the TiVo button at the top stopped responding.

I'll try power cycling the tivo again. As for the remote suggestions, I really don't think this has anything to do with the remote.

When I press the tivo button on the remote, the tivo makes the noise as if it's going to the tivo menu.

When I press the tivo button ON THE UNIT (humax burner units have a tivo button on the face) it does the same thing, making the tivo sound, but no menus appear.

It seems to me like a software issue... as if the 'menu app' of the tivo isn't running, whatever that may entail. On screen graphics work fine otherwise, including the title bar showing program info, and the progress bar across the bottom whenever I FF, RW, Pause, etc.
