drive or hardware failing?

I have a SD-DVR80 tivo that has just started to "skip" - it seems that anything which is recorded (new or old recordings) will stutter periodically. Watching live tivo doesn't seem to have this issue. There is also hesitation when pressing Tivo or going thru the menus. My guess is that there is a HD problem but I don't see any indicator in the system screens.

Before I go off and dupe the HD I'd like to get some input.

Sounds like the hard drive is starting to have errors.

I thought it was the HD on my Sony SVR 2000 as well and ordered the replacement from PTV upgrade. The upgrade went fine, but the DVR is exhibiting the exact same behavior: picture freezes (sometimes pixellates) for about 5 seconds and sound drops out. Happens on average once every half hour program. Apparently this has nothing to do with the HD; seems unlikely that the new one would do exactly the same thing. I emailed PTV about it but no answer yet.
