View Full Version : Modern Day Theme Songs/Opening Music?

What tv shows of the moderan day have theme songs or opening music you remember? Which of those do you sit through and listen to and not fast forward?

I would guess if you quized me I could not hum a bar of most shows I watch. A few exceptions. In no particular order:

1) Sopranos. When the theme song kicks on I get jazzed up. The opening has been the same since the very first episode and I watch the entire thing every time.

2) Rescue Me. This show has very long opens, so when the Theme comes it is a good respite before the rest of the show. This one also gets me a bit keyed up for the show.

3) Entourage. This one is okay for me. I probably let it run half the time or more. Not a must listen

4) Deadwood. I love Deadwood, but the introduction is an instant fast forward. I just don't like the tone or pace from it, and I don't really like the open at all.

I really can't think of any others off the top of my head. It seems like the goofy/catch theme song for shows has really gone down. Perhaps the heyday was the 70s and 80s for such things.

So what are some of your most memorable theme songs?

The one that I thought was the coolest and I still really enjoy is the NCIS theme. And I do like BSG as well.

I kinda like the CSI NY theme, too, but sometimes I still FF through that.

I usually always just FF through the beginnings now-a-days, but I used to always watch the opening of "Third Watch" (Crystal Method "Keep Hope Alive").

I like the CSI "Who Are You?" as well.

- HBO's Big Love (song by the Beach Boys)

- Hex (the song is "#1 Crush" by Garbage, and is about 10 years old. The lyrics really fit the show well).

- Weeds

- BSG

Worst: The new song they came up with for "The L Word".

Same for The Office.

Also like the theme music to the show "House"

I love the music used by Sopranos and Deadwood for their openings, but I still FF through them. How many times can a person hear something, even if it's good? Me... not too many. :)

Second The 4400 and NCIS.

Always used to sit through West Wing and Cheers (not so modern), and alwasys fast forward Entourage. (Always!)

And even though it was cancled YEARS ago, the theme song to Quantum Leap would ALWAYS get stuck in my head!

I'm going to get shot for this one:

"Enterprise" - I liked it even better when they rearranged it for the third season onward.

It's still embarrassing that it was not an original song written for the show. It was actually the end title song for the film "Patch Adams." PATCH ADAMS!?!?!? Written by the most prolific and successful song writer living today.....Diane Warren.

I'm probably in a drastic minority here, but I like the opening for The Shield. It almost always comes right after a REALLY big moment in the opening, it's short and sweet, and always sets the tone for the harsh edge to the show.

"Take my love, take my land..." :D
Actually it took a while for this song to "grow on me"; initially it sounded to me like the music and vocals were in mis-matched keys or something, but I guess it's just an unusual arrangement.

Scrubs, it's too short to fast forward through and I like the song anyway.

I also find the new intro for Eureka! to be interesting enough that I don't imagine I'll fastforward that this week (and the music that goes with it is sort of eerie, and I like that too). Although it's only been on once, so I don't know if that necessarly meets the criteria here.

My fiancee likes the intro to Las Vegas and Veronica Mars.

Didn't we just do this a few weeks ago?

Having formed my musical teeth on the likes of Josie and the Pussycats, I still find myself enjoying jangly jinglesque theme songs. How I Met Your Mother's little piece is cute, Psych's new lead song is great (and I agree with the fellow Monk snob, the first piece was better .. stupid Randy Newman), I'll Be There For You is a TV classic and of course:

My name is .. SHAKE ZULU, the MIC RULAH!

(Most of the Adult Swin tunes are awesome in my book~)

I really like the opening theme songs to Rescue Me and Veronica Mars.

Both of them are alternapop songs that were not written for the shows ("Come on, Come on" by the Von Bondies and "We Used to Be Friends" by the Dandy Warhols), but the lyrics and melodies and tempos really fit each of the shows well.

I like the bland (on purpose) opening to The Office also, and I don't FF through it, but mainly because it's so short.

Yeah, me too. I also liked Rome's opening which was real similar in style. (So similar in fact that I did some googling and found out they had the same music director for both series.)

Yup, I always sat through that one. The drums at the very beginning of that theme were powerful. And I was always impressed that the show always started exactly on time. When I started the recording, the theme started. Always.

I like The Unit's intro - perfect for that type of show. I'm also a big fan of the Veronica Mars opening, even the remixed one that debuted this year. Scrubs was great until they shortened it to "I'm no Superman" - now it's too short to even call it an intro.

I used to really like the Ed opener, but it was jarring when they up and changed the entire song one season.

But for sheer getting-me-excited openers, nothing beats 24. I hear that come on, and my BP jumps 10 points. It's like I'm one of Pavlov's dogs. :D

It is funny I started this thread and never saw it again until today. :)

Another one I would add to this list is the Office. Some from the past people mentioned, Cheers was good.

I also don't skip Scrubs, but as mentioned it is very short.

I like that song, even though it is a very small part of it for the show itself. A few years back I used it as a mouseover effect for my fantasy football website.

But the best theme song is easily The Sopranos.

Can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

Yeah, I hate to be such a Firefly homer, but this was the best theme song evar. "There's no place I can be since I found Serenity"

The mismatch was in combining eastern and western musical styles in one piece. I think Joss did a great job and you can even hear him sing it on the bonus features of one of the DVD's.

Almost brings a tear. :)

Scrubs, Veronica Mars, and The Office are about the only ones I watch/listen to. Mainly because they're short and there's no commercial break between the song and the next segment of the show (except for Scrubs, I believe). And because I like them, especially The Office, but I'd probably skip through Scrubs and Veronica Mars sometimes if they were longer and were followed by commercials. Oh, and The Sopranos, I always sit through that one.

On the Air Now

1. The 4400 (The Season Three video edit is frakked, but the song is the same)
2. nip/tuck (Watch for the twitchy hand and the moving eyes)
3. Battlestar Galactica (Blood-spattered centurions... What's not to love?)

Not Currently Airing

1. The Boondocks (Grandpa goes "ninja" with his belt)
2. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (Last couple of seasons with the plasma-welding spacewalkers)
3. Star Trek: Enterprise (I was the one who actually liked that song)
4. The West Wing
5. That Bochco-produced Iraq war show that put the theme song at the end.
