I am trying to fix my DSR 704. I'm sort of green with programming or issuing commands to Unix. So I need some tutoring here. It just died on me (started to slow down freezes and now it is hang on the power up screen). What do I need to fix it? If I hook up to a computer how do I check the hard drive for problems (or maintenance if I can)? If this is kaput what do I need to revive my tivo (besides a new hard drive)? Is the OS that comes with the box is available somewhere on the forum (or some other link)
Thank you
Luis

Instantcake from ptvupgrade.com will give you the TiVo image you need. The disk pretty much does everything for you as long as you connect the drives to the proper places. You need to get the version that is specific to your TiVo.

Well at least I see the light at the end of the tunnel. Before I ditch the old hard drive I would like to check what is going on with the drive and or a least save the contents out of it.
Thank you for your lightning fast reponse!!!!

You can take the hard drive out of the TiVo and get a bootable CD image with drive tools feom the hard drive manufacturer and run the diagnostics. Just do not boot to windows NT or XP as that makes the drive no longer bootable in the TiVo.
